Arbeloa Confirms Exit from Real Madrid

Alvaro Arbeloa, who played for Real Madrid from 2009 to 2016, has confirmed he will leave his position as head coach at the end of the season. Jose Mourinho is expected to be appointed as his successor.

The 43-year-old took over as head coach in January, promoted from his role leading Real Madrid B, replacing former Liverpool teammate Xabi Alonso. After a season without trophies, Arbeloa will depart the club.

Mourinho, currently managing Benfica, is in final negotiations to return to Real Madrid, where he previously managed from 2010 to 2013.

Speaking at a news conference before Real's final match of the season against Athletic Club on Saturday, Arbeloa confirmed he would not join Mourinho's staff.

"Mou has a fantastic technical team, he's got good people around him, if he comes to Madrid he will come with his team," said Arbeloa.
"There's no chance that I would be with him. Then, my future... from Monday I'll think about that."

Arbeloa Welcomes Mourinho's Potential Return

Despite his departure, Arbeloa expressed hope that Mourinho's return would be positive for the club.

Real Madrid will conclude the season as La Liga runners-up, marking a second consecutive season without a major trophy. They were eliminated in the Champions League quarter-finals by Bayern Munich.

Reflecting on his time at Real, Arbeloa said he hoped the upcoming match was not a final goodbye.

"I hope it's a see you later... I've always considered this my home, I've belonged to Madrid for 20 years in various roles," Arbeloa said.
"It will be my last game this season as coach of Real Madrid, I don't know if it will be the last game of my life as coach of Real Madrid.
"We never know. I'll try and enjoy it and try to get the win."

Analysis: Challenges and Transition

Arbeloa's announcement was anticipated by Real Madrid supporters. With Mourinho favored to succeed him, Saturday's home fixture against Athletic Club is expected to be Arbeloa's final match after a five-month tenure.

Fans may view Arbeloa's time in charge with disappointment, as results fell short of the club's high expectations. Real Madrid has endured two consecutive trophyless seasons, while rivals Barcelona secured La Liga with a 14-point lead.

Arbeloa's strong connection to Madrid and dedication to the club were unquestioned. Some considered his mid-season appointment a difficult challenge. However, inconsistent results, absence of trophies, dressing-room issues, and the intense pressure at a club demanding immediate success contributed to his brief spell as head coach.

The timing of Mourinho's official appointment remains uncertain. Club president Florentino Perez recently confirmed upcoming presidential elections, in which he will seek re-election.

Complicating matters, Spanish media reported that businessman Enrique Riquelme has initiated steps to challenge Perez for the presidency. If validated, this would be Real Madrid's first contested presidential election in nearly 20 years.

Riquelme must fulfill specific requirements and formalize his candidacy by Saturday, coinciding with the final game of the season. A confirmed election process could delay Perez's plans to reappoint Mourinho until the election date is set.
