Romero to Miss Spurs' Season Finale Amid Relegation Battle

Tottenham Hotspur head coach Roberto de Zerbi has addressed the absence of club captain Cristian Romero from the team's final Premier League match against Everton. Despite understanding the disappointment among fans, de Zerbi confirmed that Romero will not be present at the stadium for the crucial fixture.

The 28-year-old Argentine defender is currently in his home country, sidelined due to a knee injury sustained earlier this season. He is undergoing rehabilitation with the aim of being fit for the upcoming World Cup this summer. Spurs face Everton at home on Sunday in a match that could determine their Premier League status for next season.

A victory for Tottenham would secure their safety in the league, while a draw should suffice given their superior goal difference compared to 18th-placed West Ham United. Some players unable to participate, such as Ben Davies, are expected to attend the match, but Romero is instead anticipated to watch his boyhood club Belgrano compete against River Plate.

Medical Decision and Club Communication

De Zerbi explained that Romero's return to Argentina was a joint decision made with the club's medical team to facilitate his rehabilitation process.

"He spoke with the medical staff. Together, they decided to go to Argentina to complete the rehab,"

the coach stated.

"We spoke last week. With me, he showed always he wants to stay with us. The injury is already injured and we have to accept.
"I'm not stupid. If I understand there is any player or some player who thinks for himself before the club, I can't be the same Roberto. With Cuti Romero, I can't say nothing because with me in my time, he's been correct. At the beginning until now."

When asked about the potential fan reaction to Romero's absence, de Zerbi acknowledged their feelings.

"100% I understand."

Belgrano president Luis Artime has reportedly confirmed that Romero has permission to use the club's training facilities during his recovery. The injury occurred during a match against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light in April.

Romero recently shared a congratulatory video to Belgrano, who have qualified for their first Argentina Primera Division Apertura final. The final is scheduled to begin at 19:30 BST, following Spurs' match against Everton at 16:00 BST.

Focus on Available Players for Crucial Match

De Zerbi emphasized that his attention remains on the players available for Sunday's game and that Romero's presence or absence at the stadium will not alter preparations.

"The decision was with the medical staff and I think he can't change nothing if Romero is at the stadium or not,"

he added.

"I have no time to lose energy or thinking [about] other things. We have to focus just on the game and I think we have the players good enough to achieve our target."

Context of Romero's Absence and Its Timing

It is not uncommon for players to return to former clubs or home countries during recovery from long-term injuries, particularly when playing abroad. However, the timing of Romero's absence is notable given Tottenham's precarious position in the league.

Spurs are one of only six clubs to have participated in every Premier League season and have not been relegated to the second tier since the 1977-78 season. With the club's immediate future at risk, their captain's nearly 7,000-mile distance from the team is a significant point of discussion.

Romero's treatment status in Argentina remains unclear as he aims to be included in Argentina's 26-man World Cup squad, where they enter as defending champions.

Uncertain Future at Tottenham

When questioned about Romero's long-term future with Tottenham, de Zerbi refrained from providing a definitive answer.

"I don't know. I think Cristian is a top player and with me, was a top guy. When I say top guy, it is because I'm sure of what I am saying.
"For the future, I don't know. [Sunday] is a huge game for our future, for our club, for our fans to stay together."
