Premier League to Launch Streaming Service in Singapore
The Premier League will introduce its own streaming platform, Premier League Plus, in Singapore starting next season, with plans to explore global expansion. This new service will enable fans to watch all 380 matches of the season along with additional content through a Netflix-style app.
This marks a shift from the traditional broadcast model where rights packages are sold to broadcasters. However, existing agreements, such as those with Sky Sports and TNT Sports in the UK, will remain unaffected.
Several other major sports organizations, including the NFL, NBA, Major League Baseball in North America, and Formula 1, have already established similar direct-to-consumer streaming platforms.
Premier League chief executive Richard Masters announced the new service, formerly known as "Premflix," at the Financial Times Business of Football Summit in London on Thursday. He described the launch as the result of "a very long, considered process."
'Looking to Build a Business'
"For the first time the Premier League is going to have its own customers.
This is a new app you can download and have on your smart TVs, your laptops, and watch 380 matches and loads of shoulder content, 24/7 channel service and it's going to be an exciting product.
We're also looking to learn, to see how that might be replicated all around the world."
Masters further commented on the potential for expansion:
"If it goes well, it may be replicated" but did not "want to predict further than that" at this stage.
The launch of Premier League Plus will coincide with the opening of a new Premier League Studios production hub located in Olympia, London.
Broadcast rights have historically been a significant revenue source for the Premier League. The current domestic rights package, shared between Sky and TNT, is valued at a record £6.7 billion.
Direct-to-consumer subscription platforms provide sports organizations with greater control over content distribution and the opportunity to increase revenue streams.
