Peter Leven Departs Aberdeen After Multiple Interim Roles
Aberdeen Football Club has officially announced the departure of Peter Leven, who served as caretaker manager on three separate occasions. The 42-year-old, a former midfielder for Kilmarnock and Milton Keynes Dons, had been a member of Aberdeen's coaching staff since 2023.
Leven's exit follows the recent appointment of Stephen Robinson as the club's head coach and a comprehensive review of the coaching structure at Pittodrie Stadium. Alongside this change, Ian Burchnall, who joined Aberdeen in February, will continue as part of Robinson's coaching team at least until the summer.
Statements from Sporting Director Lutz Pfannenstiel
Speaking to the club's official website, Sporting Director Lutz Pfannenstiel expressed appreciation for Leven's contributions:
"Peter has stepped up and lead the club on multiple occasions in recent years and gave his all when we needed him most.
He has been a terrific servant and I have no doubts he will go on to be a manager in his own right.
Whilst we are naturally disappointed to see Peter leave, changes to coaching staff are expected when a new head coach arrives and looks to make a fresh start."
Additional Coaching Changes
In addition to Leven's departure, former Aberdeen assistant Tony Docherty also left the club last week. Docherty, who previously managed Dundee and Ross County, had returned to Pittodrie to assist Leven until a permanent managerial appointment was made.
Leven's Tenure as Caretaker Manager
Peter Leven first assumed the caretaker manager role following the dismissal of Barry Robson, overseeing one game before returning to his position as first-team coach after Neil Warnock was appointed interim manager. He later served as caretaker while the club awaited the permanent appointment of Jimmy Thelin and stepped in again after Thelin's departure earlier this season.
