Josh Sargent to Join Toronto FC

Norwich City striker Josh Sargent is set to sign with Major League Soccer side Toronto FC in a transfer deal reportedly worth over £20 million, according to BBC Radio Norfolk.

The 26-year-old American forward has netted eight goals in 25 appearances across all competitions this season, including an impressive six goals in Norwich's first five matches of the campaign.

The initial transfer fee is estimated at approximately £15.5 million, with additional clauses potentially increasing the total to more than £20 million. Sargent is expected to agree to a five-year contract with the Canadian club.

Sargent is scheduled to fly to Canada on Friday to undergo a medical examination with Toronto FC.

The final transfer fee could set a new MLS record, surpassing the £20 million-plus deal for Son Heung-min's move to Los Angeles FC in August.

Sargent joined Norwich City in 2021 from German club Werder Bremen for a fee of £8 million. During his time at Carrow Road, he scored 53 league goals in 147 appearances and amassed 56 goals in 136 appearances in all competitions for the club.

His most recent appearance for Norwich was in early January, after which he has been training with the club's second team.

The USA international is on his way to Canada to sign for MLS side Toronto in a deal which could earn the Canaries over £20m. As always with modern transfer fees, there are add-on criteria's that need to be filled down the line, but the targets are said to be "achievable".

Despite his current position as public enemy number one amongst Canary fans following his refusal to play in the FA Cup tie against Walsall, Sargent is the club's best player.

The blow of losing him will be softened by the emergence of transfer window signing Mohamed Toure who now has five goals in three games, but it remains to be seen if the Australian can permanently fill the Sargent-shaped void.

Top scorer Jovon Makama will miss a large part of the rest of the season with a foot injury so 21-year-old Toure is now the main man with Dane Mathias Kvistgaarden acting as another option.

Sargent will look to pick up his career in the MLS and make a late claim to be part of the World Cup squad, a tournament which will take place partly in the States.

For Norwich supporters it's a bitter end for a previously much-loved striker they voted for as player of the season in 2025.

Additional Information

Sargent's departure marks a significant moment for Norwich City, as the club prepares to adjust to the loss of their leading striker. The emergence of Mohamed Toure offers some optimism for the Canaries, although the challenge remains to fill the gap left by Sargent's exit.

Fans and analysts alike will be watching closely to see how both Sargent's career progresses in MLS and how Norwich adapts in his absence.
