Max Dowman Sets Premier League Record as Arsenal Triumph Over Everton
Max Dowman has continued to make history since joining Arsenal, breaking James Vaughan's 2005 record to become the youngest scorer in Premier League history at 16 years and 73 days old.
Since his debut, Dowman has set multiple records for Arsenal, including becoming the youngest player to appear in the Champions League, the youngest to start a match for the club, and the youngest to feature in the FA Cup. He is also the club's second-youngest player and the second-youngest to play in the Premier League, trailing only fellow academy graduate Ethan Nwaneri.
Dowman's rapid rise has been anticipated by those following his career. He has trained with Arsenal's first team since age 14 and has drawn comparisons to Lionel Messi from manager Mikel Arteta. At just 15, he was included in Arsenal's pre-season tour of Asia, where he was among the team's most dangerous players, winning penalties against Newcastle and Villarreal. His threat continued into his Premier League debut when he earned a penalty against Leeds in Arsenal's first home league game of the season.
Arteta has consistently praised Dowman's talent, acknowledging the need for cautious management of the young winger. In January, Dowman committed his future to Arsenal by signing a pre-contract agreement, which will allow the 16-year-old England youth international to sign professional terms upon turning 17 on 31 December.

Arteta Praises Dowman's Impact in Vital Victory
Saturday's match against Everton initially appeared challenging for Arsenal, who struggled to extend their lead over Manchester City at the top of the league. The team's attack lacked cohesion, and a potential penalty was denied when Kai Havertz tangled with Michael Keane in the first half.
With the score tied, Arteta introduced 16-year-old Dowman alongside £64m summer signing Viktor Gyokeres. Dowman immediately influenced the game, confidently taking on defenders and creating opportunities. He played a crucial role in the opening goal when his cross was misjudged by Jordan Pickford, allowing Gyokeres to score.
Dowman then sealed the victory by beating two defenders and scoring while Pickford was positioned for an Everton corner. The goal sparked widespread celebration among players and fans alike.
"It was a great moment," Arteta told Sky Sports. "Especially the way the goal built up and we had 10-15 seconds to really enjoy what was about to happen. "It was magical. On the bench and all the players together, jumping with the crowd. It was a beautiful day. "It is not only the goal that he scored, [Dowman] changed the game. Every time he got the ball, he makes things happen and we are more of a threat. "To do that at that age, in this context, with the pressure, the expectations to win the game - it's just not normal."
Arteta, who has highlighted Dowman's abilities throughout the season, was not surprised by the teenager's performance. He noted that Dowman's training during the week gave him a "gut feeling" about his impact.
"It's so organic for him, he doesn't feel the pressure. He goes, gets the ball, stops on the ball," Arteta said. "It's natural for him, that's the best thing, so just make sure he does what he feels. "When you have such a talent then I'm sure good things are going to happen. What we do is to create memories and create moments. "For many years, I think people who were in the stadium today will say 'I was in the Emirates that day when that kid at 16 scored a goal at such an important stage of the season'."
Arteta's Strategic Use of Substitutes Continues to Pay Off
This season, Arteta has frequently utilized his bench to alter the course of matches. Arsenal's significant summer investment of approximately £250m has enhanced squad depth and quality, contributing to their success.
Both goals against Everton were scored and assisted by substitutes, bringing Arsenal's tally to 11 goals and 10 assists from bench players this season—seven more than any other Premier League team.
"I said 'these are the moments in the season when something special has to happen', and he knows he has the ability, which I have to give him the opportunity, and he will deliver," Arteta said regarding his instructions to Dowman before entering the match.
With seven league games remaining, Arsenal leads the Premier League by nine points over second-placed Manchester City, who drew with West Ham on the same day. Arsenal has played one more game than City.
"I think it's been incredible the last couple months. It's been sensational," Arteta said. "We are in every competition and we are competing in every single game like it's the last one and some days we'll be better, some other times exceptional, some other times not that good. "But that relentless desire to win I feel in the team is just one of the best things that, in my opinion, this team has."
Arsenal also prepares for the Carabao Cup final next week against title rivals Manchester City, with the positive momentum potentially aiding their pursuit of a major trophy for the first time since 2020.
