Carrick and Guardiola Attend FA Youth Cup Final

Reigan Heskey scored a decisive late goal as Manchester City secured a 2-1 victory over rivals Manchester United to win the FA Youth Cup for the fifth time.

The final echoed a similar two-legged contest from 40 years ago, which City also won. The match was heading towards extra time before Heskey struck from a tight angle five minutes before full time, securing the win for Oliver Reiss' squad.

Manchester United, managed by Darren Fletcher, hold a record 11 titles in the competition but last won the trophy in 2022, with current first-team player Kobbie Mainoo featuring in their victory over Nottingham Forest.

Prior to the match, controversy arose regarding the venue. City stated that the Etihad Stadium was unavailable due to ongoing construction, leading to the game being held at the 7,000-capacity Joie Stadium. United expressed disappointment over their unsuccessful attempts to host the match at Old Trafford and were also dissatisfied with the final outcome.

The match was relatively subdued until five minutes before halftime when Floyd Samba revitalized the game with a remarkable 25-yard free kick, curling the ball into the top corner beyond United goalkeeper Cameron Byrne-Hughes.

United responded swiftly, equalizing two minutes later through centre-back Godwill Kukonki, who made a powerful run upfield and finished with a strong header from Jim Thwaites' cross-field pass.

However, it was Heskey, son of former Liverpool and England striker Emile Heskey, who ultimately secured the victory for City, allowing them to lift the trophy in front of their home supporters.

City Prove Too Strong for United

United's incoming manager Michael Carrick was seated alongside his coaching staff, with first-team captain Bruno Fernandes, Mason Mount, Luke Shaw, and Patrick Dorgu also in attendance.

On the City side, the youth players celebrated alongside first-team manager Pep Guardiola and senior players including Phil Foden, Antoine Semenyo, and Nathan Ake as the U18 team lifted the trophy.

Pre-match focus was on Teddie Lamb and JJ Gabriel, who collectively scored 54 goals this season, but both were largely contained during the game.

City striker Lamb had a close-range effort denied by Byrne-Hughes' exceptional reflexes and also saw another shot cleared over the crossbar from inside the six-yard box.

At the opposite end, Premier League U18 Player of the Season JJ Gabriel forced a comfortable save from Max Hudson and was booked for simulation in the penalty area.

United's Chido Obi missed a promising chance but was later denied by a sliding challenge from City captain Kaden Braithwaite when he had a better opportunity 14 yards out.

Following the exchange of first-half goals, City believed they deserved a penalty when Byrne-Hughes appeared to bring down Samba in the box, but only a corner was awarded, much to the hosts' frustration.

Reiss' team created more chances in the second half, with Heskey testing the goalkeeper with a shot that struck the side netting before scoring the winning goal that will be memorable for his career.
