Milner Breaks Premier League Appearance Record
James Milner set a new Premier League appearance record during Brighton's match at Brentford's Gtech Community Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The 40-year-old former England midfielder started the game, marking his 654th Premier League appearance and surpassing the previous record held by Gareth Barry.
Milner's inclusion in Fabian Hurzeler's starting XI was his first Premier League start since 30 December at West Ham. He had equalled Barry's record earlier on Wednesday, 11 February, in a game against Aston Villa, a club he represented from 2008 to 2010.
Manager Praises Milner's Dedication
Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler spoke highly of Milner's professionalism and influence, describing him as a "role model on and off the pitch."
"There's no surprise why he's where he is at the moment - because he has such great discipline. He has such a great effort every day and he is never satisfied. It's a great day for him to show us again why he is the record-holder regarding the Premier League games."
Milner began his professional career as a 16-year-old at Leeds United in 2002. Over his extensive career, he has also played for Newcastle United, Aston Villa, Manchester City, and Liverpool in the Premier League.
Playing Time and Fan Reactions
Since joining Brighton in 2023, Milner has not been a regular starter, with only three of his 16 Premier League appearances for the club coming from the starting lineup. Many Brighton supporters have criticized Hurzeler's decision to introduce Milner late in matches this season, suggesting the moves are intended to help Milner reach the record rather than to benefit the team tactically.
Last season, Milner made just four league appearances.
Record Background and Career Achievements
Gareth Barry, who was Milner's teammate at both Aston Villa and Manchester City for 134 of their combined 653 games, held the Premier League appearance record since September 2017.
Milner earned 61 caps for England during his international career. He won the Premier League title twice with Manchester City and once with Liverpool. Additionally, he secured the FA Cup and the League Cup with both clubs and lifted the Champions League trophy with Liverpool.
Milner's current contract with Brighton extends until the end of the season.
