Match Updates and Early Incidents
15 mins: Spittal receives a booking after lunging at Allan as the full-back clears the ball. Despite having no chance to win the ball, Spittal slides into the player, a poor decision rightly penalised by the referee.
14 mins: Milne falls easily after minimal contact from Wilson, earning a free-kick near halfway.
13 mins: The ball reaches Baningime on the edge of the box; fans urge him to shoot but he is closed down before taking a shot, and the attack fizzles out.
James Tavernier Withdraws from Rangers Squad
At 12 minutes, news from the Press Association reveals that James Tavernier has pulled out of what was expected to be his final Rangers game at Ibrox after being named on the bench. The 34-year-old right-back, who has spent 11 years at the Govan club, was anticipated to bid farewell to the fans in the penultimate Premiership game of the season.
The official match programme contained tributes to Tavernier, who was jeered by opposing fans when substituted during the 3-1 defeat at Parkhead on Sunday. This marked Rangers' third consecutive post-split loss, consigning them to third place this season.
It is understood Tavernier was displeased at being told by manager Danny Rohl that he would not start against Hibernian, although he was likely to come on during the match, and chose to withdraw.
Rangers Fall Behind Early
5 mins: Rangers concede a goal to Hibernian's Boyle. Sky briefly attempts to show the goal but then opts not to.
Match Moments
9 mins: Home fans react sarcastically as Hogarth delays a goal kick and then sends it straight out of play.
7 mins: Broggio passes into the area, creating a shooting opportunity for Wilson, but Milne recovers to block the shot. Falkirk continue to play assertively.
Falkirk Goal Disallowed
4 mins: Falkirk's Miller is released down the left, finds space, and slides a precise low shot inside the far post. However, the goal is disallowed due to an offside flag.
2 mins: Falkirk exert early pressure, with Broggio winning a corner after goalkeeper Schwolow fails to catch two crosses in quick succession.
1 min: The match begins with a whistle. Celtic had kicked off approximately 90 seconds earlier in their game.
Pre-Match Atmosphere and Manager Comments
The Tynecastle crowd is lively, singing the Hey Jude la-la-la-la parts.
"It’s going to be tough, that’s for sure. Hearts are going to have everything to play for. They’ve got to do their business. We’re here to put on a show, to show everyone how good a team Falkirk are. We need to get a good start in the game. It’s imperative, from our point of view, that we defend well and get a good start in the game."
Hearts’ lead in the league has shrunk from eight points in early March to just one point tonight, adding pressure to maintain their position.
Manager Derek McInnes notes that Cammy Devlin and Harry Milne may not play the full 90 minutes but prefers to start them rather than have them on the bench.
"Just concentrate on the game. We’ve just got to assume that three points is going to be really important and the focus is just trying to beat Falkirk. They’re a good team. Sometimes you play teams that don’t have a lot to play for but that isn’t the case here. It’s hard to ignore [the hype], we’ve got to try to enjoy and relish it. But there’s work to be done to get three points here and that’s what we’re concentrating on."
Falkirk manager Jens Berthel Askou declines to comment on transfer rumours linking him with Toulouse.
"It’s great. I just told the players, I think we’re made for these events, to compete in them. We’re going to get one hell of a crowd here and that’s going to lift us even more, so we can’t wait. Fourth position [would be] a massive achievement for the club. We’re here to make our own dreams come true, that’s what we’re working on, and everyone else has to deal with their own."

Pre-Match Commentary and Context
Sky presenter Eilidh Barbour describes the evening as "on the brink of a historic night," reflecting the intensity of the Scottish Premiership title race.
The title race has become highly competitive, with Hearts hosting Falkirk and Celtic, just one point behind Hearts with two games remaining, visiting Motherwell. Celtic comes into the match on the back of five consecutive league wins. A Hearts victory combined with a Celtic defeat tonight would decide the title.
If the title is not decided tonight, it will be settled when Hearts and Celtic face each other on Saturday. Meanwhile, Rangers host Hibernian; Rangers are guaranteed third place regardless of results, while Hibernian could move between fourth and sixth.
Tonight’s fixtures, all kicking off at 8pm BST, are:
- Hearts v Falkirk
- Motherwell v Celtic
- Rangers v Hibernian
Hearts manager Derek McInnes shared his thoughts ahead of the crucial night:
"I’ve just assumed Celtic are going to win their game, I’ve had it in my head that we’re going to the last game and I’m prepared for that. Listen, there’s no easy games for anybody, nothing’s straightforward. Motherwell are a more than capable team. They were fully committed against us and I’m sure that’ll be the same again against Celtic.
We have been trying to hold off a couple of heavyweights for a long time now. We’ve managed to see off Rangers and we’ve got to try and see off Celtic over the next two games. I think the facts show we’re coping brilliantly. We’ve already broken a club record in terms of points tally and we’ve got a Champions League qualifier already secured, but obviously we want to try to go one better now and win the league."
Journalist Ewan Murray provides a preview:
"It is a sign of shifting attitudes that the fact Hearts could claim the Scottish Premiership title on Wednesday was somewhat lost in analysis of the weekend’s events. Given Celtic’s form such a scenario is an unlikely one, but that it exists at all is remarkable: a Hearts win at home to Falkirk, coupled with defeat for Celtic at Motherwell, means the Edinburgh club will become champions for the first time since 1960.
“It’s nice to be able to hear ‘Hearts could win the league at Tynecastle,’” says their manager, Derek McInnes. “I don’t know how many people have been able to say that in their lifetime. The likelihood is we are going to have to win two games or certainly pick up four points.” In a quirk of history, both of Hearts’ titles in the 20th century were secured at St Mirren’s former Love Street ground."
