FPL Season Enters Crucial Phase

As the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) season progresses into its critical stage, every managerial decision gains increased significance due to the limited time available to recover from mistakes.

Choosing a captain this week is particularly challenging. With Arsenal and Chelsea set to face each other in a potentially close encounter, attention shifts to Liverpool, Manchester United, and Manchester City as promising options.

Erling Haaland's inconsistent form over the last 10 matches, during which he has scored only three goals, has led to hesitation in selecting him as captain. Liverpool lacks a clear standout candidate, prompting a preference for Bruno Fernandes, who has returned to his preferred number 10 role and offers considerable upside.

The team of the week is compiled based on current FPL prices, designed to fit within a £100m budget, simulating a Free Hit scenario.

Fans are encouraged not to miss the special FPL Q&A session with expert FPL Heisenberg, scheduled to be broadcast live on the website on Friday at 15:30 GMT.

 FPL team of the week

Review of Last Week's Team Performance

The previous week's midfield selections underperformed significantly. Only James Hill (6 points), Joao Pedro (7 points), and Daniel Munoz (9 points) contributed, resulting in a modest total of 45 points.

's FPL Team of the Week for Gameweek 28

Goalkeeper and Defence

Caoimhin Kelleher, Brentford, goalkeeper, £4.7m - Burnley (away)
Brentford's defensive unit is a worthwhile investment as they approach a favorable sequence of fixtures, including home matches against Wolves and Everton. Burnley has averaged fewer than one goal per home game this season.

Virgil van Dijk, Liverpool, £6m - West Ham (home)
The Dutch defender has amassed 28 points over his last two matches, much to the disappointment of managers who transferred him out for Gabriel ahead of Arsenal's double gameweek. Liverpool also enjoys a strong run of fixtures, with a blank in gameweek 31. Despite missing recent points, acquiring Van Dijk remains a sensible option.

James Hill, Bournemouth, £4.1m - Sunderland (home)
Nicknamed "budget Van Dijk," Hill secured his fifth consecutive return last week. He benefits from promising fixtures, consistently contributes defensively, and is among the most affordable defenders available. Sunderland has scored only six goals away this season.

Diogo Dalot, Manchester United, £4.5m - Crystal Palace (home)
Dalot has demonstrated attacking threat beyond what underlying statistics reveal. He scored 12 points three games ago and frequently finds himself in advantageous positions without delivering the final pass. Over five games, he has created five chances and two big chances. Holding the United right-back spot firmly, Dalot offers both security and potential at a reasonable price.

Nico O'Reilly, Manchester City, £5m - Leeds (away)
Since Pep Guardiola repositioned O'Reilly into midfield four games ago, only Haaland and Antoine Semenyo have recorded more shots and big chances for City. His two-goal performance against Newcastle last week marked a peak. While he does not accumulate defensive points in this role, his £5m price for an out-of-position defender with scoring potential represents excellent value. Managers should monitor City's blank in gameweek 31 and plan accordingly.

Midfield

Bruno Fernandes (captain), Manchester United, £9.9m - Crystal Palace (home)
Fernandes has excelled at home but has also missed opportunities for additional FPL points. He has had 12 big chances but converted only six goals. His 19 big chances created lead all midfielders in the league, with only Rayan Cherki (14), Declan Rice (13), and Pedro Neto (11) surpassing ten. When Fernandes performs at his best, substantial point hauls are possible.

Marcus Tavernier, Bournemouth, £5.3m - Sunderland (home)
Tavernier is a player to watch after returning from injury and could serve as a budget-friendly midfielder for the season's final phase. Bournemouth's favorable fixtures and Tavernier's role as penalty taker are positive indicators. He has been involved in 23% of Bournemouth's goals when on the pitch, primarily from earlier in the season when Semenyo was the team's key player. His influence is expected to grow now that he is back and Semenyo has departed.

Harry Wilson, Fulham, £5.9m - Tottenham (home)
Wilson had a three-game blank streak before last week but continues to generate significant attacking statistics. Only Raul Jimenez has taken more shots in the past four games, and no Fulham player has created more chances than Wilson. His performances often earn bonus points, and Fulham will be optimistic facing a Tottenham side currently in turmoil.

Forwards

Erling Haaland, Manchester City, £14.8m - Leeds (away)
Leeds has achieved notable results at Elland Road against top teams, including draws with Liverpool and Manchester United, though they suffered a heavy defeat to Arsenal recently. This makes the upcoming match difficult to predict. Manchester City is capable of dominant performances but has also struggled away from home. Haaland returns to the team of the week after showing sharpness against Newcastle, despite missing a significant chance that could have led to a double-digit score.

Hugo Ekitike, Liverpool, £8.9m - West Ham (home)
West Ham has conceded only once in their last three league games, improving from previously holding the league's worst defensive record. Facing Liverpool at Anfield presents a tougher challenge than their recent matches. Liverpool has won their last two games 1-0 with late goals but has underperformed their expected goals (xG) by nearly 50% during this period. It is anticipated they will score at least twice this week, and Ekitike, who has the third-best xG per 90 minutes (0.52) in the league, is likely to be involved.

Benjamin Sesko, Manchester United, £7.2m - Crystal Palace (home)
Although including three Manchester United players may seem excessive, Sesko has earned a starting position following impressive substitute appearances. He and Haaland are the only two players with a higher xG than Ekitike. Only Arsenal and Manchester City have scored more goals at home than United, who average just under two goals per game at Old Trafford.

Substitutes Bench

Martin Dubravka, Burnley, goalkeeper, £4m - Brentford (home)
Dominik Szoboszlai, Liverpool, midfielder, £6.8m - West Ham (home)
Elliot Anderson, Nottingham Forest, midfielder, £5.4m - Brighton (away)
Ezri Konsa, Aston Villa, defender, £4.5m - Wolves (away)
