Ferguson Ruled Out of World Cup Play-Off
Roma striker Evan Ferguson will be unable to participate in the Republic of Ireland's upcoming World Cup play-off matches after sustaining an ankle injury that will sideline him for the remainder of the season.
Ferguson's loan tenure at Roma is expected to conclude prematurely as he is set to return to his parent club, Brighton and Hove Albion, to undergo surgery on the injured ankle.
The 21-year-old forward has netted five goals in 22 appearances for the Serie A side, although his season has been disrupted by multiple injuries.
"It is now clear that he will finish the season here and will have surgery on his ankle, he will no longer have time to recover even in the end of the season," Roma manager Gian Piero Gasperini stated ahead of Sunday's match against Genoa.
Republic of Ireland's World Cup Play-Off Path
The Republic of Ireland are scheduled to face the Czech Republic on 26 March in a play-off semi-final. If victorious, they will advance to the final to play either Denmark or North Macedonia in Prague.
During the qualifying campaign, Ferguson contributed three goals for manager Heimir Hallgrimsson's team. However, he missed critical matches, including the win over Portugal and the last-minute victory in Hungary that secured the play-off spot, due to injury.
If the Republic of Ireland qualify for their first World Cup since 2002, they will be placed in Group A alongside co-hosts Mexico, South Korea, and South Africa.
