New Ownership Sparks Hope Amidst Recent Struggles

Dagenham & Redbridge have experienced a series of unusual ownerships in recent years. Supporters who traveled to Enfield remain hopeful that YouTube sensation KSI represents a genuine turning point for the club.

At the full-time whistle during the match at Enfield Town, the prospect of reaching the Premier League felt distant. A few hundred traveling Dagenham & Redbridge fans expressed their dissatisfaction with boos after witnessing 90 minutes of uninspiring football at a level they have not seen since the early 2000s.

The club’s new minority owner, YouTuber KSI, was not present to hear the jeers. He has ambitious plans to elevate Dagenham to the top tier of English football.

“And I’d like to marry Brad Pitt,”
joked Suzanne Collier, a supporter of 43 years, from the away end.

Fans have encountered similar promises before.

“You’re promised the world and you’re just given a ham sandwich,”
said Liam Roberts prior to kickoff in north London.

Dagenham’s recent ownership history includes a series of underwhelming and occasionally peculiar investors. Club Underdog, affiliated with North Sixth Group and specialists in lower-league clubs, oversaw the team’s relegation to the National League South at the end of last season. A year ago, Egyptian social media star Marwan Serry invested with dreams of Premier League promotion.

“I feel like a child playing Fifa,”
he remarked. However, within five days, he completely withdrew his involvement.

Serry’s departure followed the revelation of controversial social media posts regarding the Israel-Gaza conflict by Salma Mashhour, another Egyptian influencer appointed as a club director alongside Serry. The club’s relegation to the sixth tier, a level last reached in 2000, ensued. Subsequently, an announced takeover by a private Qatari consortium collapsed.

Optimism has since returned with KSI’s arrival. Olajide Olatunji, known as KSI, is one of the most recognizable figures in the UK among those under 30.

“I knew about him because my kids knew him,”
said Andrew Denson, 54.
“It can only be good for the club, right? Worldwide recognition and a bit of money hopefully to improve the squad and everything else.”

The 32-year-old YouTuber-turned-rapper and boxer, who also serves as a judge on ITV’s Britain’s Got Talent, attended the 1-0 home victory over league leaders Dorking last weekend. He was seated alongside former England striker Andy Carroll, another recent investor since the Happy Fan Group consortium, led by American businessman John Grabowski, acquired Dagenham from Club Underdog last month. Carroll remains registered as a player but has been sidelined since December due to injury.

Contrasting Fortunes and Ambitions

On a sunny Saturday, the atmosphere highlighted the differing trajectories of two clubs. Enfield Town, proud of being England’s first fully fan-owned club, are struggling to avoid relegation. Meanwhile, Dagenham & Redbridge sit nine points shy of the playoff positions, with expectations to ascend the league table swiftly.

Dagenham’s model draws inspiration from Wrexham, who benefit from the active involvement of celebrity owners. Their progression from non-league football to the Premier League appears imminent. Following the example set by Wrexham’s owners, KSI engaged directly with the club’s operations this week at the Leisure United training facility, conversing extensively with manager Lee Bradbury and playing table tennis with players.

Similar to Wrexham, Dagenham & Redbridge will be featured in a documentary series titled Race to the Top, broadcast on KSI’s YouTube channel, which boasts 17 million rs. The National League’s broadcast partner, Dazn, aired the Enfield match globally during the UK’s 3pm TV blackout. Misfits Boxing, a sports promotion company founded by KSI, also holds a deal with Dazn.

Fan Reception and Club Legacy

Despite concerns about the potential distractions celebrity ownership might cause, and the fact that many senior fans were unfamiliar with KSI, his involvement has received support among the traveling fans at Enfield.

“We hopefully will bring in a younger, London-based fanbase,”
said Collier. Roberts noted the increased visibility:
“You can be walking down the street in a Dagenham kit and people go: ‘Oh, I know what that is because KSI’s got that kit.’”

Dagenham exited the Football League in 2016 after a nine-year tenure. Anwar Uddin, who captained the side that achieved promotion to League One via the playoffs in 2010, has returned as non-executive chair, further bolstering optimism.

“That’s the biggest positive,”
said Collier,
“having someone who calls Dagenham his own.”

Amid recent changes, Steve Thompson announced his departure as managing director after 45 years with the club, spanning periods before and after the 1992 merger that created Dagenham & Redbridge.

Looking Ahead

KSI aims to restore the club to its former prominence. His early fame was built on playing the video game Fifa, guiding teams from the lowest online leagues to the top. This background resonates with fans who recall his teenage videos recorded in his parents’ bedroom.

“It feels like the days are getting brighter for Dagenham,”
said Roberts.
“It’s not all doom and gloom any more.”
