Reece James Commits Long-Term to Chelsea

Chelsea captain Reece James has agreed to a new six-year contract that will keep him at Stamford Bridge until 2032.

The 26-year-old, a product of Chelsea's youth academy, made his first-team debut in September 2019. His new contract, initially reported by The Athletic, reportedly includes an incentive-based structure tied to both individual and team performance.

James is currently Chelsea's highest-paid player, earning £250,000 per week. His previous contract was set to expire in 2028, making him a key priority for renewal following the club's takeover by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital in 2022.

This season, James has started in 19 of his 26 Premier League appearances and has accumulated a total of 225 appearances for Chelsea.

Career Achievements and Leadership

James has enjoyed significant success with Chelsea, winning the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Super Cup in 2021, as well as the 2025 UEFA Conference League and FIFA Club World Cup. He was appointed club captain three years ago.

Negotiations reportedly progressed swiftly, with James encouraged by his recovery progress following a series of injuries that disrupted previous seasons. In December 2023, he underwent surgery to address a recurring hamstring injury.

On the field, James has demonstrated versatility, effectively playing in both full-back and midfield positions. He has also impressed with his leadership qualities, which have improved since early criticism under former head coach Enzo Maresca.

International Ambitions

James has expressed that securing a place in England's 2026 World Cup squad is a major personal goal, having missed the last two tournaments due to injury.

He returned to international duty in early 2025, participating in qualification matches against Albania and Latvia after a two-year absence from the England squad. Although he withdrew from the squad for October friendlies against Wales and Latvia due to injury, he returned in November to play in England's 2-0 victory over Serbia at Wembley.
