Introduction

Apologies for the delay in updates; I was working on yesterday’s blog and encountered loading issues. I am now hurrying to the ground.

The biscuit served with my coffee this morning at a charming Hyde Park café was a Bourbon. Has the Lotus finger biscuit now disappeared from the scene?

Yesterday's Round-Up

Jonny Bairstow delighted the spectators who braved the chilly conditions at Headingley with his first century as Yorkshire captain.

There was palpable excitement at the opportunity to see Joe Root, Harry Brook, and Bairstow bat together for the first time this year. Root received a warm reception, akin to the comfort of a cinnamon bun, after Matt Revis carefully left a ball that nearly hit the stumps. Root was gaining momentum with consecutive boundaries but was dismissed lbw for 44 by Matthew Fisher, who now represents Surrey but was bowling effectively at his former home ground.

Fisher also dismissed Brook, who advanced down the pitch but was caught cheaply behind the wicket, prompting a disapproving murmur from the Headingley crowd. However, Bairstow responded impressively, hitting a classic six into the Western Terrace and compiling an unbeaten 241-run partnership with fellow centurion Adam Lyth.

James Rew, recently selected for England, returned to Somerset’s middle order and regained form with a score of 86 against Sussex. He was supported by Toms Lammonby and Abell, who both contributed scores in the seventies. Meanwhile, Ben Kellaway, unexpectedly left out of the Lions squad, scored a composed 139 for Glamorgan, rescuing the team from an early position of zero for two against Warwickshire.

Nineteen-year-old Ben Dawkins impressed with a maiden first-class century, scoring an unbeaten 181 against Durham. Alongside Sam Northeast, who scored 141, Kent capitalized on a favorable pitch at Beckenham.

At Southampton, Nottinghamshire’s Josh Tongue approached his first Test selection with confidence, at one point bowling Nick Gubbins to the ground. However, it was Fergus O’Neill who placed Hampshire under pressure by dismissing their top four batsmen.

Northamptonshire’s Ben Sanderson took five wickets for 47 runs, exacerbating Gloucestershire’s difficulties. Daniel Lategan and Matthew Waite contributed to rebuilding efforts following Worcestershire’s middle-order collapse at Southport. Additionally, Derbyshire’s Ben Aitchison claimed a five-wicket haul against a fragile Middlesex side. Leicestershire’s Jake Weatherald and Sol Budinger dominated Essex’s bowling attack before the bowlers regained control.

Score on the Doors

Southampton: Hampshire 152-6 versus Nottinghamshire

Bristol: Gloucestershire 154 versus 37-3

Southport: Lancashire 28-0 versus 270

Saturday Morning Update

Good morning and happy Saturday. Leeds is experiencing a mix of sunshine and clouds as Jonny Bairstow continues to captivate the crowd with his maiden century in that role. Both he and Adam Lyth have the opportunity to extend their innings this morning unless the pitch offers unexpected challenges.

Play is scheduled to commence at 11 a.m. across the grounds. Your company is most welcome.
