Men's T20 World Cup, Group C, Kolkata
West Indies posted 182-5 in their 20 overs, with Shimron Hetmyer scoring a rapid 64 off 36 balls. Brad Currie took 2-23 for Scotland.
Scotland managed 147 runs in 18.5 overs, with Richie Berrington top-scoring at 42 from 24 balls. Romario Shepherd delivered a standout bowling performance, taking 5 wickets for 20 runs.
Scotland commenced their T20 World Cup journey with a 35-run loss to two-time champions West Indies at Eden Gardens. The match was largely influenced by Hetmyer's aggressive half-century and Shepherd's exceptional five-wicket haul.
Scotland entered the tournament as late replacements following Bangladesh's boycott. Despite moments of promise, they were unable to match the caliber of the West Indies, who previously won the tournament in 2012 and 2016.
After finishing fourth in the Europe Qualifier last summer, Scotland had initially appeared to miss out on the 2026 World Cup. However, their late inclusion demonstrated their capability to compete at the highest level.
Chasing 183, Scotland found themselves struggling at 37-3 in the sixth over. Captain Richie Berrington and Tom Bruce then formed a partnership that briefly revived hopes of an upset.
The duo added 78 runs for the fourth wicket, with Berrington leading the charge with a brisk 42 from 24 balls. However, his dismissal at 115-4 halted Scotland's momentum.
West Indies sealed the victory decisively when Romario Shepherd took four wickets in the 17th over, including a remarkable hat-trick, concluding with figures of 5-20.
Opting to bowl first, Scotland managed to restrict West Indies to 182-5. This total was considered competitive after the Windies endured pressure from Scotland's bowling attack, despite powerful hitting from Hetmyer and Rovman Powell.
In their sixth World Cup appearance, Scotland maintained composure during the powerplay as West Indies reached 33 without loss. Michael Leask and debutant Oliver Davidson then struck in quick succession.
Leask, an off-spinner, dismissed West Indies captain Shai Hope in the ninth over. Davidson, a 21-year-old left-arm bowler, followed by removing Brandon King, who had scored 35 off 30 balls.
At the halfway mark, West Indies were 66-2. Hetmyer's explosive batting shifted momentum back to the Windies, supported by Powell's 24 runs from 14 balls.
Hetmyer reached his half-century in 22 balls, the fastest by a West Indies player in T20 World Cup history, surpassing Chris Gayle's 23-ball record set in 2009 against Australia.
He struck 40 of his first 52 runs in boundaries. Alongside Sherfane Rutherford, who contributed 26 runs off 13 balls, Hetmyer propelled the team from 66-2 at 10 overs to 138-2 with five overs remaining.
Hetmyer's innings ended with a spectacular catch by Brandon McMullen at wide long-on during the penultimate over. By then, West Indies had established control of the match.
Despite tight death bowling from Brad Currie, who finished with 2-23, West Indies posted a challenging total that Scotland could not surpass.
T20 World Cup: Shepherd takes hat-trick as Windies blow away Scotland - as it happened

Hetmyer, Shepherd Light Up Kolkata
Romario Shepherd made his T20 International debut against Ireland in 2020.
Although Scotland were late entrants to the T20 World Cup, Hetmyer was an even later arrival in India, reaching Kolkata only on the eve of the West Indies' opening match due to visa issues.
Nevertheless, the 29-year-old Guyanese left-hander showed no signs of jet lag during his aggressive innings at Eden Gardens.
Hetmyer's 22-ball half-century set a new West Indies record for the fastest T20 World Cup fifty, breaking Chris Gayle's previous record of 23 balls.
He struck 40 of his initial 52 runs in boundaries. With support from Powell and Sherfane Rutherford, who scored 26 off 13 balls, Hetmyer guided the team through a dominant middle phase, taking the score from 66-2 in 10 overs to 138-2 with five overs remaining.
Hetmyer hit six sixes and two fours at a strike rate of 178 before being dismissed by a remarkable catch from McMullen.
Hetmyer also contributed in the field, taking a brilliant one-handed catch to dismiss Scotland opener George Munsey early in the innings.
However, it was Shepherd who was the standout bowler for West Indies.
With Scotland at 132-5 and needing 51 runs from 24 balls, Shepherd took four wickets in five balls, reducing Scotland to 133-9.
He dismissed Matthew Cross, Michael Leask, and Oliver Davidson to complete a hat-trick, then took the wicket of Safyaan Sharif to record his first five-wicket haul in T20 Internationals.
This performance provided West Indies with a strong platform as they aim for a record third T20 World Cup title.
