Bashir Reinstated for First Test Against New Zealand

Shoaib Bashir, who has appeared in 19 Test matches for England but last played during the third Test against India at Lord's last summer, has been confirmed as England's primary spinner for the upcoming first Test against New Zealand. Despite being omitted throughout the recent Ashes series, Bashir has been included in the 12-man squad announced for Thursday’s series opener at Lord's and is set to feature in the starting XI, while England continue to deliberate on their pace bowling options.

Alongside Bashir, uncapped seamer Sonny Baker has also been named in the squad, potentially competing with Gus Atkinson for the final place in the playing eleven.

Bashir’s last appearance for England was at Lord's in July during the third Test against India, where he notably secured the final wicket to clinch a thrilling victory, despite having sustained a broken finger. The 22-year-old recovered in time for the Ashes tour but was not selected for any of the matches during England’s 4-1 series defeat.

Although Bashir faced challenges in tour matches and practice sessions, England attributed his absence to the spin-unfriendly conditions encountered during the Ashes.

"We firmly believe in Bash as an international cricketer," England head coach Brendon McCullum told .

"When I look back to why he wasn't required in Australia, it wasn't to do with how the ball was coming out of his hand per se, we just felt the conditions were not conducive to spin bowling – as did Australia.

"We remain hugely confident and optimistic about Bash as a cricketer and the role he can play for us."

England’s Squad for the First Test

The 12-man squad selected for the first Test against New Zealand includes: Ben Duckett, Emilio Gay, Jacob Bethell, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Jamie Smith, Ben Stokes (captain), Gus Atkinson, Josh Tongue, Ollie Robinson, Sonny Baker, and Shoaib Bashir.

Additional insights on England’s bowling attack and player readiness have been discussed in related analyses, including the roles of key bowlers and injury updates.

Bashir’s Career and Recent Form

Bashir was selected to make his England debut as a 20-year-old during the 2024 tour of India, having played only six first-class matches for Somerset at that time. Despite not being Somerset’s first-choice spinner, he was elevated to England’s leading spinner and has since taken 68 wickets across 19 Tests.

At the conclusion of last season, Bashir transferred from Somerset to Derbyshire, where he has taken 15 wickets in six County Championship matches this summer. His selection for the Lord's Test comes ahead of Rehan Ahmed, the leg-spinner who will miss out on playing his first home Test.

"What we've seen since he made the shift in county and been able to get game time under his belt – we know he's an immensely cricketer, and he just needs more and more opportunity," said McCullum.

"You can only do so much in the nets. Playing cricket for a young spinner, being able to work through situations and scenarios, to get some game time under his belt over the last little while has been hugely beneficial.

"He's growing at quite an amazing speed, not just in his spin bowling, but even just his presence, and his overall athleticism."

Other Team Changes

England will also hand a Test debut to opener Emilio Gay, who replaces Zak Crawley following Crawley’s poor performance during the Ashes. Jacob Bethell has recovered from a finger injury and will bat at number three in a home Test for the first time.
