Curran Seeks Opportunity to Replace Stokes in Test Side
Sam Curran, who last appeared in Test cricket in 2021, has expressed his desire to fill the vacancy left by Ben Stokes' retirement but emphasized he will not pressure himself to force a return to the Test arena.
Stokes' unexpected retirement has left England needing to appoint a new captain and devise a balanced team strategy for their upcoming series against Pakistan in August.
Since his last Test match, Curran, now 28, has been active only in England's white-ball formats. Nevertheless, he is considered a strong candidate to assume Stokes' role as a seam-bowling all-rounder.
"Yeah, of course.
But it's one of those things where I just want to try to perform my best and whenever the time comes they decide whoever is going to replace Stokesy - playing for England is amazing and I'm a competitive guy.
When I've got a ball or bat in my hand I just try to do my best, so we'll see what happens."
Team Balance Challenges Following Stokes' Departure
England's difficulties without Stokes were evident during the second Test against New Zealand, which he missed due to an incident in a London nightclub. The team opted to include an extra specialist batter, left out spinner Shoaib Bashir, and fielded four frontline seamers.
This approach might be repeated now that Stokes has retired permanently, although it risks leaving the team unbalanced. Securing an all-rounder would enable a five-man bowling attack, including a spinner.
Curran, representing Surrey, remains a viable option as a seamer. Additionally, spin-bowling all-rounder Rehan Ahmed has been part of England's squads for the three Tests this summer. Another spin-bowling all-rounder, James Coles, was recently selected for the England one-day squad for the first time.
Curran Addresses Speculation and Pressure
"It's something you have to always deal with," Curran said. "There's no doubt, with Ben Stokes retiring there will be hype around it.
At the same time, I'm sure whoever comes in will do their best and try to get the focus on them, rather than on Ben. There's no doubt he will be a big miss for England, and we'll see how it goes.
There is a lot of noise on Stokesy retiring, but I don't really want to put too much pressure on myself. Whatever happens over the next few weeks, my main thing is to try to contribute and win games for England, and what will be, will be."
Additional Context and Team Updates
Ben Stokes has confirmed he will not reverse his retirement decision.
Former England captain Michael Vaughan has suggested a "complete clearout" involving McCullum and Key.
Discussions continue regarding the future of English cricket leadership and the impact of Stokes' departure.
Stokes was known for creating memorable moments on the field, which will now be absent.
England XI for Second T20 Against India
Sam Curran is included in the England XI set to face India in the second T20 match at Old Trafford on Saturday.
England have made two changes from the XI that played in the abandoned series opener on Wednesday, with Jofra Archer and debutant Josh Tongue replacing pace bowlers Saqib Mahmood and Luke Wood.
Harry Brook, the Test vice-captain, will captain the side again. Prior to the first T20 at Chester-le-Street, Brook described it as an "honour" to be considered as Stokes' successor as Test captain.
India's Squad and Selection Decisions
During their tour of Ireland and England, India have yet to debut 15-year-old batting prodigy Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.
Morne Morkel, bowling coach for the world champions, indicated that Sooryavanshi is likely to remain on the sidelines in Manchester.
"We've had the number one batter in T20 cricket, Abhishek Sharma, and Sanju Sansom was the player of the World Cup," Morkel said.
"As a coaching staff, it's only fair to show faith and back your players. Yes, there's a young man knocking on the door and it's exciting, but it's a good sign that we show that we back the guys."
James Coles Joins England ODI Squad
Following his selection for the England T20 squad, James Coles has also joined the group for the three ODIs against India later this month.
Zak Crawley, who was part of England's last ODI series in Sri Lanka in January, has lost his place in the 50-over squad after being dropped from the Test team.
Jacob Bethell is expected to be promoted to open alongside Ben Duckett.
