Rothesay County Championship, Division One, Ambassador Cruise Line Ground, Chelmsford (day one)
Essex 184: Westley 44; Patterson-White 6-43
Nottinghamshire 111-2: Hameed 68*; Snater 2-29
Notts (3 pts) trail Essex (0 pts) by 73 runs
Liam Patterson-White achieved his first six-wicket haul in first-class cricket, delivering career-best bowling figures that dismantled Essex's fragile batting lineup at Chelmsford.
Following Nottinghamshire's heavy defeat by Somerset last week, where they lost by 306 runs, Patterson-White sparked Essex's collapse from 87-2 just before lunch and claimed five of the seven wickets that fell in the afternoon session, finishing with 6-43.
The 27-year-old spinner's statistics could have been even more remarkable if Shane Snater had not struck him for three sixes in a late resistance as Essex were bowled out for 184 at tea. Essex captain Tom Westley adopted a measured approach, scoring 44 runs off 66 balls, but his teammates failed to replicate his performance.
In contrast, Nottinghamshire captain Haseeb Hameed displayed a promising form. By the close, the former England opener, who had struggled for runs earlier in the season, remained unbeaten on 68 as Nottinghamshire reached 111-2 in their reply, trailing Essex by 73 runs.
Match Progress
Essex had hoped to capitalize on a sunny day and a pitch with some grass, but early indications suggested a challenging batting environment. The openers took until the fifth over to score their first run and managed only 31 runs in 13 overs before losing two wickets.
Dean Elgar was dismissed lbw by Brett Hutton after playing around a ball that did not rise, marking his 11th score under 20 in 14 innings this season. Paul Walter followed, edging Olly Stone and departing before the ball reached the wicketkeeper's gloves.
Tom Westley justified his decision to bat first after winning the toss by scoring a boundary off the first ball and accumulating seven more, including two straight drives and a cover drive, before becoming Patterson-White's first wicket just before lunch. Westley had been part of Essex's highest partnership of 56 runs in 17 overs with Charlie Allison, who contributed 13 runs. Westley was caught at slip after attempting to drive a delivery.
After lunch, wickets fell rapidly. Allison was run out following hesitation at the non-striker's end when Matt Critchley's prod passed the infield to Hameed at point, who returned the ball to the wicketkeeper to complete the dismissal. Shortly after, Critchley was lbw to Fergus O'Neill.
Michael Pepper, who had experienced a disappointing red-ball season, adopted an aggressive approach to revive his and Essex's fortunes. He played two drives through the covers off O'Neill and two sweeps off Patterson-White. However, Patterson-White dismissed Pepper when he misjudged a delivery that popped up to second slip.
Patterson-White then took the final five wickets. Simon Harmer was bowled after failing to get to the pitch of the ball, Luc Benkenstein was caught behind, and after a partnership of 44 runs for the ninth wicket between Shane Snater and Charlie Bennett, Bennett was caught in the slips and Snater was bowled attempting a fourth six.
Following this display of spin bowling, Harmer was introduced into the Essex attack after seven overs but did not achieve similar success.
In Nottinghamshire's innings, Ben Slater was dismissed early, edging Snater to the wicketkeeper. Thirteen overs later, Snater claimed his second wicket by bowling Freddie McCann.
