Cooke's Century Anchors Glamorgan After Early Collapse

Chris Cooke scored his first century in two seasons, guiding Glamorgan to a recovery at 244-6 after Surrey's Gus Atkinson and his pace colleagues had reduced the hosts to 79-6.

Glamorgan 244-6 (80 overs): Cooke 101*, Crane 59*; Clark 2-32, Atkinson 2-33

Atkinson, who was dropped by England on disciplinary grounds, delivered hostile early spells against Glamorgan, claiming two early wickets cheaply and causing Colin Ingram to retire hurt after a hand injury.

Sean Abbott and Jordan Clark also took two wickets each after Glamorgan elected to bat first.

However, Cooke, aged 40, reached his first hundred in two years, dominating a 165-run partnership with Mason Crane, who remained unbeaten on 59, before bad light ended play prematurely.

Pre-Match Ceremony and Team Changes

Before the start of play, a ceremony was held to rename the National Cricket Centre in honour of Hugh Morris, the late Glamorgan chief executive and captain. Surrey players wore Graham Thorpe headbands to support mental health campaigns in memory of the late Surrey and England batsman.

Glamorgan reinstated Billy Root in their lineup, replacing the injured Zain Ul Hassan. Surrey made five changes, including the returns of fast bowler Atkinson and Indian spinner Rahul Chahar.

Early Innings and Bowling Pressure

Root began cautiously but then drove Sean Abbott to gully for six. Abbott responded with an inswinger that beat Asa Tribe's defensive shot when the score was 21.

Surrey maintained tight bowling through an accurate seam attack, rotating their bowlers in short spells. Atkinson struck during his second spell, first dismissing Kiran Carlson, who edged to the wicketkeeper, then bowling Ben Kellaway through the gate as Glamorgan slumped to 39-4.

Ingram and Sean Dickson resisted until lunch, but Jordan Clark took two wickets in quick succession, dismissing Dickson and Timm van der Gugten.

Between these wickets, Ingram was forced to retire hurt after being struck on the hand by Atkinson, further destabilizing Glamorgan, who had been dismissed for 155 on the first day against Sussex the previous week.

Cooke and Crane Stabilize the Innings

Cooke and Mason Crane then arrested the collapse. Cooke played confidently, dispatching loose deliveries and maintaining a run-a-ball pace.

Batting conditions improved against the older ball in the afternoon sunshine. The spin of Chahar and Dan Lawrence was economical but less threatening than the pace bowlers.

Cooke, whose previous highest Championship score in seven games was 39, reached 50 off 56 balls and demonstrated the experience to endure quiet periods.

Crane provided solid support, scoring his third half-century of the season in a patient innings lasting 120 balls. He was dropped on 53 off a caught-and-bowled chance by Ryan Patel.

Late Afternoon Play and Bad Light

Surrey delayed deploying their three fast bowlers until the new ball was due. Cooke reached his century off 143 balls, a vital innings for Glamorgan.

However, the visitors' decision to hold back their pacemen backfired as fading light, despite floodlights being on, forced umpires to suspend play as the players prepared for the new ball.
