ECB to Confirm Support for McCullum Despite Ashes Loss

Brendon McCullum has been instructed to enhance his relationships with the counties after receiving backing to remain as England coach following the 4-1 Ashes defeat this winter.

disclosed this development the day after England’s exit from the T20 World Cup three weeks ago. The decision will be officially confirmed on Monday by Richard Gould, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) chief executive, alongside Rob Key, the managing director of men’s cricket.

Gould and Key will also provide details regarding the ECB’s post-Ashes review and explain the rationale behind maintaining confidence in McCullum despite England’s disappointing performance in Australia.

McCullum’s Commitment to Rigorous Preparation

As reported earlier this month, a significant factor in McCullum’s retention has been his agreement to implement a more disciplined approach to training and preparation, as demonstrated during the World Cup in India and Sri Lanka. This included the introduction of a midnight curfew, a change in methodology that is expected to continue.

Improving Relations with Counties

Additionally, the ECB has emphasized to McCullum the necessity of making greater efforts to foster positive relationships with the counties. Many county representatives feel sidelined by the coach’s selection approach.

Gareth Batty, Surrey’s head coach, voiced a sentiment shared by many within the cricket community last week, stating:

“The pathway between county and international cricket had become ‘misted over’,”

despite five Surrey players being part of the Ashes tour and three included in England’s T20 World Cup squad.

Upcoming Lord’s Meeting with County Directors

Rob Key has initiated the first step by inviting all 18 county directors of cricket to a meeting at Lord’s next week to discuss their selection strategy. This meeting will also be attended by Ed Barney, the ECB’s performance director.

Appointment of New National Selector and Potential Model Changes

The ECB is currently in the process of appointing a new national selector to succeed Luke Wright, who stepped down after the World Cup for personal reasons.

One potential enhancement under consideration is appointing liaison officers from the counties. These officers would engage in regular discussions about selection with Key, McCullum, and the new national selector.
