Stokes and Atkinson Dropped Following Night Out Incident

England head coach Brendon McCullum has expressed deep concern for the wellbeing of Ben Stokes, the England captain who was omitted from the squad for the upcoming Test match against New Zealand at the Kia Oval. This decision comes after Stokes and seamer Gus Atkinson were stood down following a night out after the series opener at Lord’s.

The incident involved Saracens rugby player Totoa Auvaa and has prompted an internal investigation by the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB). The situation has cast a significant shadow over England’s preparations for the Test.

Uncertainty Surrounding Stokes’ Future

In the immediate aftermath of the incident, there were reports suggesting that Stokes might resign or even retire from international cricket. However, as of now, the 35-year-old has not made any public statements regarding the matter. McCullum has consistently emphasized the importance of focusing on Stokes’s welfare rather than speculating on disciplinary outcomes or the future of his captaincy.

McCullum’s Reflections on the Incident

Speaking on Monday, McCullum described his initial reaction to the news as one of bewilderment, followed by a range of emotions including anger and disappointment. He referred specifically to the episode at a Chelsea nightclub that led to the disciplinary actions.

“When I first found out about it I was slightly bewildered, if I’m being honest. Then you go through a range of emotions. You go from being bewildered, on to angry, on to kind of gutted,”

he said.

However, McCullum quickly shifted his focus towards concern for Stokes’s wellbeing and the need to support both players involved, while acknowledging that they had not met the standards expected of them.

“But very quickly … my overall emotion turned to worry and concern for Ben in particular. Since then it has been about how we support these guys, whilst not overlooking the fact they have not lived up to the standards we have set for ourselves.
For me it’s very much about how we support these guys through the next stage, in particular Ben. That is very much where my mind is at, my worry for him.
What will be will be down the line. Those decisions are not for now. The concern is making sure Ben is fine. We need to make sure we look after him, rally around him, and in time we’ll get on to those sorts of decisions. For me I’m just making sure I’m checking in with him. That’s where things sit at the moment.”

Stokes’ Training and McCullum’s Continued Concern

When asked about Stokes’ recent appearances in training with Durham and reports that he is prepared to play for the county against Northamptonshire on Friday, McCullum responded with a measured pause before reiterating his primary concern.

“I’m worried about Ben. That’s it,”

he said.

“I’ll leave it at that.”
