Century Secures Win Against Pakistan in T20 World Cup
Harry Brook, England's white-ball captain, expressed relief and satisfaction after scoring a sublime century that helped secure England's place in the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup. Reflecting on the challenges he faced in recent months, Brook described this period as "probably the hardest of my life."
Despite often appearing effortless on the field, Brook's recent experiences have been challenging. During the Ashes series, he managed just two half-centuries and averaged 39.77, marking his second-lowest average in a Test series where he played more than one innings. Towards the end of the Australian tour, it emerged that Brook had been involved in a controversy related to a breach of COVID-19 protocols in Wellington on the eve of the final fixture of his first overseas tour as an international captain. This incident has continued to affect him since.
Speaking in Pallekele following England's victory over Pakistan, which earned them the two points needed to reach the final four, Brook stated:
"It’s probably been the hardest winter of my life to be honest. There’s been a lot of stuff behind the scenes. Well, not behind the scenes. But it’s nice to see some rewards for my hard work."
In a strategic move, Brook batted at No 3 for the first time in his international T20 career. This adjustment was suggested by England's head coach, Brendon McCullum, on the morning of the match and communicated to the team during the pre-match huddle. The change resulted in another outstanding performance against Pakistan, a team against whom Brook now averages 62.66 in 10 T20 innings and 84.1 in the same number of Test innings. In both formats, he has recorded his highest scores against Pakistan.
Brook credited McCullum for the decision:
"Baz was the mastermind there. He had the discussion with me this morning about going up the order. Partly it was because of my past and history against Pakistan, but also to try to maximise the powerplay. I know we were losing wickets, but my job was still to put them under pressure throughout."
The success of this experiment suggests Brook may continue to bat at No 3 in future matches. He commented on this possibility:
"I don’t know yet, that’s something for me and Baz to chat about. But the longer I bat the better it is for me. It’s a lot easier facing their best bowlers through the middle period when you’re already set."
Interestingly, exactly four years prior to this game, Shaheen Shah Afridi, who took four wickets in this match including Brook’s final dismissal, had played and won a T20 match alongside Brook for Lahore Qalandars in Pakistan’s PSL. Afridi praised Brook's innings in this match:
"In his life, I think it was the best innings. He has improved a lot. I’ve never seen a batsman like him. Today he was ready for every ball, he was really prepared for us. The way he took responsibility as a captain, he played a very good innings today."
