County Cricket Roundup: Middlesex, Essex, and Durham Triumph

A remarkable three-wicket over from Naavya Sharma, bowling from the Brian Statham end with a swift arm and sharp action, dismantled Lancashire, who suffered a dramatic six-wicket defeat against promotion rivals Middlesex after being dismissed for 84.

Sharma’s first ball of the morning was edged to slip by Matty Hurst, followed by a flat-footed Tom Hartley deflecting the next delivery behind. Tom Bailey narrowly avoided a hat-trick ball but was soon dismissed, fencing the final delivery to slip. Sharma completed his spell in the subsequent over, finishing with impressive bowling figures of four for 17.

Ryan Higgins also claimed four wickets, including the unusual dismissal of Mitch Stanley, who lost his leg bail despite the ball merely brushing the stumps. Even veteran bowler Jimmy Anderson could not defend a total of 117, as Ben Geddes asserted dominance by striking three sixes en route to a match-winning unbeaten 73. This marked Middlesex’s first Championship victory at Old Trafford since 1996.

Durham secured a comprehensive victory over Worcestershire after the latter collapsed dramatically, losing nine wickets for 38 runs and being bowled out within a single session. Ben Stokes contributed by taking a couple of late-order wickets. Ben McKinney’s flamboyant batting and Emilio Gay’s cautious approach made the target of 143 runs appear straightforward.

Essex recorded the third three-day victory of the round by successfully chasing 177 runs against Hampshire, largely due to Matt Critchley’s resilient 90 not out. This result extended Hampshire’s losing streak to three consecutive matches.

At Trent Bridge, where Surrey and Nottinghamshire have engaged in high-scoring contests, Gus Atkinson was struck twice on the helmet within two overs by Josh Tongue, who took 4-89, leading to Atkinson retiring with delayed concussion. He will miss Surrey’s next match under concussion protocols, with Reece Topley substituting. Dan Lawrence scored 104, marking his third century of the spring season.
