Friday's round-up
Somerset’s James Rew provided a bright spot on a rainy Championship day. He elegantly struck the final ball of the evening to the boundary with a perfect high elbow, finishing unbeaten on 77. Having already scored innings of 64, 122, and 48 this season, Rew’s average now stands at 100—figures that are sure to catch the attention of England selectors. Thirteen wickets fell around him, with Jake Lehmann (76), who has taken over from James Vince, again top-scoring for Somerset. Lewis Gregory and Craig Overton each claimed three wickets.
Essex managed to reduce Warwickshire to 113 for seven before rain interrupted play. Jamie Porter led the bowling effort with four wickets for 36 runs. Sam Hain, who scored 44, was the mainstay for Warwickshire as other batsmen struggled to maintain partnerships. Zaman Akhter, a graduate of the South Asian Cricket Academy (SACA) who transferred from Bristol to Chelmsford during the winter, took his first wicket for Essex.
Gloucestershire faced difficulties against Lancashire due to a mid-order collapse. Ben Charlesworth and Ollie Price had steadied the innings at 80 for one after Cameron Bancroft was run out for six. However, George Balderson’s bowling (four for 27) dismantled the middle order, taking three wickets for five runs around the lunch interval. Graeme van Buuren was dismissed for a three-ball duck, leaving Gloucestershire’s innings in disarray. Lancashire also encountered setbacks when Ajeet Singh Dale suffered a hamstring injury and was replaced by Ollie Sutton, who was called up from a second XI match in Leicestershire.
Middlesex showed resilience against Northamptonshire on a challenging Wantage Road pitch after winning the toss and electing to bat. Despite an early collapse to 20 for three, half-centuries from Leus Du Plooy and Ben Geddes, along with an unbeaten seventh-wicket partnership of 120 runs between Zafar Gohar and Joe Cracknell, revived the innings before bad light halted play.
