Welcome to The Oval
Good morning and welcome to The Oval. Hampshire have arrived for an unusual one-off match, which is out of sync with the rest of the County Championship. The main Championship fixtures will properly resume on Friday. This match has been scheduled due to fixture congestion.
At opposite ends of the ground, the two teams are engaged in keepy-uppy. Meanwhile, the groundstaff are preparing the pitch by hammering it and brushing dust into a wheelbarrow. Nearby, a player is batting in the nets, facing deliveries from a coach using a dog thrower.
The attendance is sparse at this early hour. Many people on the train appear to be heading to Lord’s, where the weather conditions, like here, look promising today. It is notable that one-off games like this have not been held since 2020 and 2021. I will attempt to uncover interesting stories beyond the cricket action and welcome any suggestions.
Play is scheduled to begin at 11am. There are plenty of chairs available on the patio for spectators.
