Stokes Could Return as England Captain for Third Test
Ben Stokes is expected to return as England captain as early as next week for the third Test against New Zealand at Trent Bridge.
Stokes and pace bowler Gus Atkinson are currently under investigation for their involvement in an incident at a London nightclub, where they breached England's midnight curfew.
It is understood that the investigation is progressing towards a resolution that could allow both players to return, although an official announcement may not be made until after the conclusion of the ongoing second Test at The Oval.
While all outcomes remain possible, there is increasing likelihood that Stokes will resume his role as captain for the match in Nottingham, which is scheduled to start on Thursday, 25 June.
Both Stokes and Atkinson were made unavailable for selection for the second Test pending the outcome of the investigation.
The incident occurred during celebrations following England's victory in the first Test, when both players stayed out past the midnight curfew and were present at the time a member of security staff was struck by a Saracens rugby player.
Although they have been barred from playing for England at The Oval, both remain eligible to participate in domestic cricket matches.
All-rounder Stokes is included in the Durham squad for their County Championship match against Northamptonshire on Friday, with the game starting at 11:00 BST. Meanwhile, Atkinson is set to feature for Surrey in their away fixture against Glamorgan.

England Faces Challenges After Poor Day Against New Zealand
England's performance has been under scrutiny after a difficult day against New Zealand, with the absence of Stokes and Atkinson impacting the team.
Dropped England Captain Stokes to Play for Durham
Despite being dropped from the England squad for the second Test, Stokes continues to play domestic cricket, representing Durham.
In a statement released on 8 June, the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) confirmed that Stokes and Atkinson had breached the curfew and were under investigation.
Following the incident, concerns arose that Stokes might retire, which would have ended his distinguished England career. However, those concerns were alleviated when he returned to training with Durham last weekend.
As part of the ongoing investigation, both players have been interviewed this week, with the ECB aiming for a swift resolution.
In media briefings, neither ECB director of cricket Rob Key nor head coach Brendon McCullum have confirmed Stokes' future as captain, fueling speculation that his four-year tenure in the role could be nearing its end.
Joe Root is currently deputising as captain for the second Test against New Zealand and has stated he will hold the role on a "game-by-game" basis.
Throughout the investigation, the ECB has denied reports that Stokes has been asked to resign.
There is now a growing possibility that Stokes will return as England captain at Trent Bridge.
A return in Nottingham would be a significant moment for Stokes. In 2018, he was cleared of affray charges following an incident outside a Bristol nightclub. After being found not guilty, Stokes played his next Test at Trent Bridge.
