Australia Dominates West Indies in First Women’s ODI
Australia secured a commanding 103-run victory over the West Indies in the first of three women’s One Day Internationals (ODIs) held in St Kitts on Saturday (AEDT). The visitors posted a record team total of 341 runs in 49.5 overs, the highest ever by a women's side in the Caribbean, before restricting the West Indies to 238 for 8 in their allotted 50 overs.
Strong Batting Performance by Australia
Opening batter Phoebe Litchfield led the Australian innings with a top score of 77 runs. She was supported by five other teammates who each scored in the 40s, contributing to the formidable total. The Australian top order started solidly, with Georgia Voll setting the pace alongside Litchfield in a 75-run opening partnership. Voll was the first wicket to fall, caught at deep midwicket off the bowling of Afy Fletcher. Ellyse Perry then continued the momentum with a score of 44 runs.
Sophie Molineux, promoted to bat at number four in her first ODI as captain, made a valuable contribution of 47 runs from 66 balls. Nicola Carey accelerated the innings towards the end with an aggressive 49 runs off 39 deliveries, helping to lift the run rate significantly.
Taylor’s Century Highlights West Indies Effort
Despite the loss, West Indies captain Stafanie Taylor produced a standout performance, scoring an unbeaten 105 runs from 129 balls. This marked her eighth ODI century and her first since 2021. Taylor reached her century with a boundary off Georgia Wareham in the 47th over. Her innings included 10 fours and a six, demonstrating her skill and determination.
However, Taylor’s innings nearly ended prematurely when she attempted a quick single on 91 runs. A potential run out was narrowly avoided due to an inaccurate throw from Wareham at the stumps.
Key Contributions and Player of the Match
Georgia Wareham was named player of the match for her all-round performance. Batting at number seven, she scored 42 runs off 21 balls, including five fours and two sixes. In addition to her batting, Wareham bowled 10 overs, taking 1 wicket for 39 runs.
Kim Garth also made a significant impact with the ball, claiming 3 wickets for 37 runs in her 10 overs, including removing the West Indies openers early in the innings.
Team Changes and Debut Performance
The Australian team featured five changes from the squad that defeated India earlier in the month in Hobart. A late withdrawal by Beth Mooney due to quad tightness led to Tahlia Wilson making her ODI debut. Wilson impressed behind the stumps as wicketkeeper, notably executing a sharp stumping of Aaliyah Alleyne off Kim Garth’s bowling.
