Australia Clinches ODI Series with Convincing Win in St Kitts
Australia secured an unassailable 2-0 lead in their One Day International (ODI) series against the West Indies by defeating the hosts by 90 runs in the second match held at Warner Park, St Kitts.
Newly appointed captain Sophie Molineux, who was rested due to a recent back injury, observed as veteran batter Beth Mooney led the Australian innings with a top score of 65 runs off 104 balls. Australia posted a total of 269 for 7 after winning the toss and electing to bat first.
Spin bowlers Georgia Wareham and Ash Gardner were instrumental in restricting the West Indies, taking three wickets each. Wareham finished with figures of 3-29, while Gardner claimed 3-34. The West Indies struggled on the turning pitch, suffering a dramatic collapse of 7 wickets for 34 runs during their innings.
The hosts were bowled out for 179 runs in 46 overs on Monday (AEDT), falling well short of the target.
Match Progress and Key Performances
Ranked ninth in the ICC ODI rankings, the West Indies initially showed promise against the world number one Australian side. However, Australia found themselves in trouble early, losing four wickets for 82 runs by the 16th over.
Ashmini Munisar was notable for the West Indies, taking two wickets in two consecutive deliveries, dismissing key players Georgia Voll (23) and Ellyse Perry, who was out for only her third golden duck in 166 ODI matches.
Mooney and stand-in captain Tahlia McGrath (24 runs) steadied the innings with a 58-run partnership. Later, Wareham contributed a valuable 39 runs batting at number seven, helping Australia to a competitive total.
During the West Indies reply, star player Hayley Matthews had the team well positioned at 1-92 after 23 overs. However, she became the first victim of a significant batting collapse.
Matthews scored 45 runs off 73 balls and was dropped by Alana King on 44. Despite this reprieve, she added only one more run before being caught by Megan Schutt in the same over in which McGrath took two wickets.
In the following over, Wareham dismissed Stafanie Taylor (18) by hitting the off-stump and then removed Deandra Dottin for a duck on the fourth ball.
Gardner also contributed with the ball, catching and bowling opener Qiana Joseph (29) among her three wickets.
Although Australia exhausted the overs of their key spinners Wareham and Gardner, West Indies managed to add some runs through Afy Fletcher (32 not out) and Karishma Ramharack (14), who put together a 49-run partnership for the final wicket.
McGrath ended the innings by breaking the last-wicket stand when Ramharack was caught by Voll, sealing the victory for Australia.
Looking Ahead
Having already secured the series, Australia will face the West Indies in the final ODI on Friday (AEDT) with the opportunity to complete a clean sweep, aiming for six wins from six matches on their tour.
