Australia Secure 43-Run Victory Over West Indies in Women's T20 International
Australia posted 164-6 and restricted West Indies to 121-6, winning by 43 runs in the first women's T20 international held in St Vincent. Key performances included Beth Mooney's 79 runs and Alana King's three wickets, which helped the touring side recover from early fielding lapses.
Challenging Start for New-Look Australian Side
The match marked the beginning of the Sophie Molineux era for Australia, who fielded a revamped team. Despite six dropped catches threatening their position, Australia managed to regain control and secure the win. The contest also raised questions about the role of Australia's new captain, Molineux, who did not bat or bowl following her return from injury.
Fielding Errors and King's Impact with Ball
Australia's fielding was uncharacteristically sloppy, with Alana King notably dropping three catches early in the innings, including two while positioned on the deep backward square leg boundary. However, King compensated with her bowling, delivering a crucial wicket by dismissing West Indies captain Hayley Matthews for 11 with a well-executed delivery that drifted across the batter before hitting the stumps.
West Indies attempted to play cautiously against King, but she continued to influence the game around a brief rain delay. Returning to the T20 side after missing the recent series against India, King trapped Shemaine Campbelle (15) lbw and bowled Deandra Dottin for a duck, finishing her spell with figures of 3 for 14, including a double-wicket maiden.
West Indies Batting Highlights
West Indies opener Qiana Joseph scored 45 runs from 39 balls, capitalizing on an early reprieve from King and hitting seven boundaries and a six. Stafanie Taylor contributed 28 runs from 25 deliveries, helping the hosts reach a more respectable total of 121-6. Australia's other legspinner, Georgia Wareham, took 2 for 14, including the wicket of Taylor caught in the deep during the final over.
Spin Bowlers Stake Claims for T20 World Cup
The performances of legspinners King and Wareham strengthened their cases for inclusion in Australia's squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup in England and Wales. Meanwhile, offspinner and captain Sophie Molineux was limited to fielding duties. Prior to the match, there were doubts about whether Molineux would bowl after a back injury sidelined her during the latter part of the multi-format series against India. Despite Australia's middle-order struggles, Molineux remained off the bowling attack and was also sent in to bat after King, Wareham, and vice-captain Tahlia McGrath.
Strong Batting from Mooney and Perry
Player of the match Beth Mooney continued her excellent form from the India series, scoring a commanding 79 runs off 55 balls at the top of the order. She was supported by veteran Ellyse Perry, who contributed 36 runs from 32 deliveries. Together, they steadied the innings after a shaky start and helped Australia reach a competitive total of 164-6. West Indies' Dottin took early wickets, dismissing Georgia Voll for 8 and finishing with 3 for 35, while Chinelle Henry claimed 2 for 28.
Post-Match Reflections from Captain Sophie Molineux
"We were in a bit of a hole there," Molineux said when asked about the most satisfying aspect of the win. "I suppose our ability to sort of bounce back there with Moons [Mooney] and Pez’s [Perry’s] partnership, and that was one thing that we spoke about coming into this game, is how important the partnership’s going to be for us."
"[King] was brilliant. She had a new role in the powerplay as well, and we had a look at that. I think most of our bowlers bowled well, but Kingey was great and her celebrations were great as well."
Upcoming Matches on Australia’s Caribbean Tour
Australia's tour of the Caribbean will continue with two additional T20 matches in St Vincent scheduled for Saturday and Monday local time. Following these, the teams will compete in three One Day Internationals in St Kitts. The planned one-off Test match has been removed from the schedule.
