Mark English Triumphs in 800m at Diamond League Shanghai
Ireland's Mark English delivered a remarkable sprint finish to claim victory in the men's 800m at the Diamond League event in Shanghai on Saturday.
The Donegal athlete maintained a position hugging the inside of the track for much of the race before overtaking four competitors in the final 10 metres, setting a new meeting record with a time of 1:43.85.
The 33-year-old's impressive performance at the Textile City Sports Centre in China secured him the $20,000 (£14,800) first prize awarded to the event winner.
Botswana's Kethobogile Haingura finished closely behind in second place with a time of 1:43.89, while American Brandon Miller took third in 1:44.00. Britain's Ben Pattison, returning from an injury-affected 2025 season, placed sixth with a time of 1:44.19.
This victory marked English's first win in a Diamond League event, having previously won a non-league Diamond League 800m race in August 2019 at the Muller Grand Prix held at Alexander Stadium in Birmingham.
English is the first Irish male athlete to win a Diamond League event, joining compatriots Ciara Mageean, Rhasidat Adeleke, and Sarah Healy as Irish winners in the elite series.
English Reflects on His Victory
Following the race, English expressed his satisfaction with the win against a strong field of middle-distance runners.
"It felt great to win the race against an accomplished field of middle distance runners.
I wasn't really thinking about the time. I'm delighted to get the win and to beat those guys in a sprint finish.
There were parts of that race where I thought they were getting away from me. It was just a matter of hanging on and thankfully I had enough left in that last 50m."
Recent Form and Records
English has demonstrated strong form in recent months, setting two indoor personal bests during the winter season.
In January, he broke his own 600m indoor Irish record with a time of 1:15.80, becoming the first Irishman to run under 1:16 in the event.
He followed this achievement by setting a new 800m indoor Irish record in February, clocking 1:44.23.
English is a two-time European Championships bronze medallist and has also earned one silver and two bronze medals at European Indoor Championships.
Other Notable Performances at the Event
British shot putter Lawrence Okoye improved his standing with a final-round throw of 66.03m, finishing fourth in his competition.
Amy Hunt recorded a season's best time of 22.48 seconds to place fifth in the women's 200m. The race was won by Jamaica's Shericka Jackson in 22.07 seconds, with Bahamian Shaunae Miller-Uibo, a two-time Olympic 400m champion, finishing second in 22.26 seconds.
Sweden's Armand Duplantis comfortably won the men's pole vault, clearing 6.12m to set a new meeting record. However, he was unsuccessful in attempts to break the world record, failing three times at 6.32m, which is 1cm higher than the mark he set in Sweden in March.
