Laura Muir to Run 5,000m at Glasgow Commonwealth Games
Scotland's Laura Muir, who secured the 1500m gold at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, will compete in the 5,000m event at the upcoming Commonwealth Games held at Scotstoun Stadium in Glasgow. This decision aligns with her goal to enhance her endurance and prepare optimally for major competitions leading up to the 2028 Olympics.
The 33-year-old athlete explained her choice to move up in distance rather than participate in the mile, which is the closest event to the 1500m and for which she holds the British record.
"Doing the 5k hopefully makes my endurance that a little bit stronger and hopefully help that 1500m," she told BBC Scotland.
"[The]1500m is getting tougher and tougher, the event is getting so strong now so I just want to try and be as strong as possible for these next two years.
"We've got the world championships next year, Olympic Games in 2028 so this is all part of the bigger picture, a little bit of an experiment year to see how things go."
Competition and Team Scotland Selection
At the recent British Championships, Muir was defeated in the 1500m by fellow Scot Sarah Calvert, who has been selected for her first Commonwealth Games as part of the Scotland team. The 24-year-old Livingston AC runner is among a 39-strong track and field squad named by Team Scotland for the home competition next month.
The team also features notable athletes such as Olympic silver medallist Josh Kerr, former world champion Jake Wightman—who recently won the British 800m title—and defending Commonwealth 10,000m champion Eilish McColgan.
Leading the para-athlete contingent is Paralympic champion and world record holder Ben Sandilands.
