Alex Pereira Targets Third UFC Title at Historic White House Event

Alex Pereira, ranked fifth in the UFC men's pound-for-pound standings, will attempt to become the first fighter to secure UFC titles in three different weight divisions. He is set to face Ciryl Gane for the interim heavyweight championship at the UFC Freedom 250 event, scheduled for 14 June at the White House.

The UFC Freedom 250 was announced last year by US President Donald Trump and is organized to commemorate 250 years of American independence.

Brazilian former middleweight champion Pereira recently vacated his light-heavyweight title to pursue the heavyweight belt, aiming to make history with a third UFC championship.

French contender Ciryl Gane last competed in October, when his fight against undisputed heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall ended in a no contest due to accidental eye pokes that required Aspinall to undergo surgery on both eyes.

Either Gane or Pereira is expected to face Aspinall in a unification bout once Aspinall recovers, although no return date has been confirmed.

MMA Community Reacts to UFC White House Event

The bout between Pereira and Gane will take place on the South Lawn of the White House in Washington, DC, serving as the co-main event on a six-fight card.

The main event will feature a unification fight between lightweight champion Ilia Topuria and interim titleholder Justin Gaethje. Topuria, a Spanish-Georgian fighter, has not competed since June due to personal issues following his divorce. Gaethje, an American, claimed the interim belt in January after defeating Britain's Paddy Pimblett.

While the White House has previously hosted recreational sports and events, this UFC show will mark the first professional live sporting event held on its grounds.

The UFC is reportedly investing approximately $60 million (£44.3 million) in the event.

Full details are yet to be finalized, but UFC president Dana White anticipates about 5,000 spectators on the South Lawn, with an additional 85,000 fans watching from a nearby park called the Ellipse.

"Fans will not be able to purchase tickets for the South Lawn, with roughly 1,000 reserved for members of the military," White stated.

White House Event Represents Significant Moment for Trump and UFC

When President Trump initially announced plans for the UFC to host a show at the White House, the ambitious idea was not unexpected due to the longstanding relationship between Trump and UFC president Dana White.

Trump hosted some of the early UFC events at his former property, the Trump Taj Mahal, in 2001. Their friendship has since grown, with Trump frequently attending UFC shows as a guest of honor, complete with his own walk-out moment.

This relationship is further strengthened by White's public endorsement of Trump, making him a key ally during the 2024 election campaign.

The intersection of sport and politics is evident, as the UFC, through White's public statements, provides a platform that supports Trump's political messaging.

Trump gains from associating with the UFC, which embodies themes such as patriotism, toughness, and masculinity—qualities that resonate with many of his political supporters.

The UFC benefits from this partnership by reaching wider audiences through Trump's global platform when he attends events and publicly endorses fighters like Colby Covington and Jon Jones.

Moreover, Trump's administration offers a powerful ally as the UFC seeks to expand its influence over mixed martial arts in the US and pursue similar opportunities in boxing.

The UFC has faced legal challenges, including a £281 million payout in a 2025 lawsuit and two additional lawsuits from former fighters.

As Trump leads US-Israeli strikes in Iran and experiences a decline in approval ratings domestically, the UFC White House event may provide a welcome distraction and political boost coinciding with Trump's birthday.

This show is not merely an ambitious project; it is designed to be a landmark moment symbolizing the political alliance between Trump, White, and the UFC.
