House Votes to Limit Military Action in Iran

The US House of Representatives approved a resolution aimed at preventing President Donald Trump from undertaking further military operations in Iran.

The measure passed with a 215-208 vote, marking a rare bipartisan opposition to the ongoing conflict that began in February. Four Republicans joined Democrats in this effort, which represents the fourth attempt by the House to restrict Trump's war powers, criticized for lacking congressional authorization.

Despite passing the House, the resolution must still be approved by the Republican-controlled Senate. Even if the Senate consents, the measure is unlikely to completely restrict military actions against Iran.

President Trump retains the option to veto the resolution, which would then require a two-thirds majority in both chambers to override.

Recent Developments and Political Context

Although a ceasefire agreement is in place, both the US and Iran have exchanged military strikes in recent days. Prior to the vote, Trump stated that negotiations to end the conflict were progressing well and could conclude by the weekend.

The Republicans who joined Democrats in supporting the resolution were Thomas Massie, Brian Fitzpatrick, Tom Barrett, and Warren Davidson. Democrat Jared Golden of Maine, who had previously opposed similar measures, voted in favor this time.

Earlier in May, the Senate passed a similar resolution but will need to consider the version advanced by the House.

Statements from Congressional Leaders

Representative Gregory Meeks, the senior Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee and co-sponsor of the resolution, described the vote as a significant bipartisan condemnation of President Trump's ongoing military engagement in Iran.

"A significant bipartisan rebuke of President Trump's illegal and costly war in Iran and the first step toward ending it once and for all."

Meeks further criticized Trump for failing to meet the war's objectives, increasing domestic fuel prices, and complicating diplomatic efforts to resolve Iran's nuclear program.

"The passage of this [measure] today signals a significant turning point: more and more Republicans are listening to their constituents who do not want another open-ended war in the Middle East."
