Dangerous Coastal Conditions Prompt Safety Advisories

Massive waves, coastal flooding, and hazardous rip currents are affecting the California coastline this week, leading authorities to urge caution for beachgoers following two recent fatalities.

Fatal Incidents at Treasure Island Beach and Santa Cruz

On Tuesday, turbulent waters swept a five-year-old girl out to sea from Treasure Island Beach in Orange County, Southern California. The child was walking with her mother and brother when the incident occurred. While bystanders successfully rescued the mother and brother, the girl was not immediately found. Her body was recovered on Thursday.

In Santa Cruz, two women were carried out to sea by the tide. One woman died, and the other remains in critical condition.

Record Tides and Flooding in San Francisco

San Francisco experienced seawater flooding on Saturday night amid record-setting tides, according to the San Francisco Bay Area office of the National Weather Service (NWS). These conditions are part of the ongoing king tides, a term used to describe the highest tides of the year.

Forecasts and Safety Warnings

The hazardous conditions are expected to continue into this week due to the persistent king tides. Forecasts indicate that Southern California beaches will experience dangerous rip currents, breaking waves, and high tides through at least late Wednesday. The NWS has highlighted an elevated risk of drowning as these conditions can pull people into the water, wash individuals off beaches and rocks, and capsize small boats.

“Remain out of the water due to hazardous swimming conditions, or stay near occupied lifeguard towers. Rock jetties can be deadly in such conditions, stay off the rocks,”

the Los Angeles office of the NWS stated in a Sunday evening advisory. The office also noted the possibility of minor flooding.

Similarly, NWS officials in San Francisco warned of increased risks including flooding of roads, parking lots, and parks, as well as sneaker waves, large breaking waves, and strong rip currents through Thursday morning. Residents were advised to avoid entering the water, and travel delays were anticipated.

Local Responses and Impact in Orange County

In Newport Beach, Orange County, city officials cautioned that high tides could lead to flooding in low-lying harborfront neighborhoods. Last week, the city manager’s office urged residents to take precautions such as installing seawall plugs and placing sandbags in vulnerable areas.

Surfing Amid Challenging Conditions

During the intense conditions last week, surfers took advantage of massive waves at the Wedge in Newport Beach, where swells reached heights of up to 20 feet. However, the conditions have posed significant challenges, with several surfers reporting highly dangerous and even life-threatening situations in the water.
