Arrests in People-Smuggling Investigation

A 25-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of assisting an organised crime group involved in people smuggling by laundering money. The arrest was made by National Crime Agency (NCA) officers at a residence in Wrexham on 30 March. On the same day, a 25-year-old man was also detained in Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

Simultaneously, French police conducted raids in and around Paris, arresting 16 additional individuals. These operations were supported by Europol, Eurojust, and the Belgian federal police. During the raids, authorities found 41 migrants, including 11 housed at a single location.

Modus Operandi of the Organised Crime Group

The organised crime group is believed to facilitate the movement of migrants by arranging flights from Vietnam to central and eastern European countries. From there, migrants travel onward to France, where they are transported to the UK using small boats and lorries. The group reportedly retains the genuine Vietnamese passports of the migrants as a form of debt bondage.

Additional Arrest and Legal Proceedings

Specialist officers also apprehended a 26-year-old man in Birmingham following a warrant issued by French authorities. He is suspected of managing accommodation for migrants destined for the UK. The man has been remanded in custody as extradition proceedings to France commence. He is scheduled to appear at Westminster Magistrates' Court.

Connection to Previous Arrests

These arrests are linked to an ongoing investigation that previously resulted in the detention and charging of five men in northwest England and South Yorkshire in February 2024.

Official Statement from the NCA

"These arrests are a great example of partnership working with our colleagues in France to tackle the groups behind dangerous crossings to the UK. Such journeys put those being moved at great risk and undermine border security.
Tackling people smuggling remains a top priority for the NCA, and this is one of approximately 100 ongoing investigations targeting groups or individuals both directly involved in organising journeys, or those who facilitate that criminality."

Alex Cruise, NCA senior investigating officer, provided the statement emphasizing the importance of international cooperation in addressing the issue.
