Welsh Secretary Supports Andy Burnham's Prime Ministerial Bid
Andy Burnham has returned to the House of Commons following his victory in the Makerfield by-election last week.
Welsh Secretary Jo Stevens has publicly declared her support for Andy Burnham to become the next prime minister.
Stevens revealed that she previously nominated Burnham during his 2015 Labour leadership campaign and intends to "nominate him again when that process opens next month".
She further noted that it will be Burnham's decision "to decide who he wants in his cabinet" should he assume the role of prime minister.
The former Mayor of Manchester secured his parliamentary seat once more after winning the Makerfield by-election last week.
Jo Stevens said she nominated Burnham when he previously ran to be Labour leader in 2015

Burnham, along with other prospective candidates, has from 9 July to 15 July to obtain the support of 81 MPs. Additionally, they have until 16 July to secure the necessary nominations from affiliated organizations, including trade unions, to remain in the leadership contest.
Stevens Reflects on Keir Starmer's Resignation
While visiting Anglesey, Stevens expressed her sadness regarding Sir Keir Starmer's resignation, describing him as an "absolutely brilliant prime minister".
"He's taken the party from oblivion in 2019 through to the biggest general election win in my lifetime and delivered across the United Kingdom over the past two years.
So, I'm very sad to see him go."
When asked about her future as Secretary of State for Wales, Stevens stated it was "an enormous privilege to serve in government".
"It will be up to Andy Burnham, if he's the new prime minister, to decide who he wants in his cabinet, and we'll wait and see what happens".
Stevens was appointed Welsh Secretary in July 2024.
