Storm Dave Brings Extreme Winds to Cumbria

Fell walkers have been advised to reconsider their Easter plans as Cumbria prepares for "extreme" weather conditions caused by Storm Dave.

An amber weather warning for wind in Cumbria is effective from 15:00 BST, with the Mountain Weather Information Service cautioning that "gusts could blow you over even at mid-heights". Gusts of 70-80 mph (113-129 km/h) are expected on the higher fells.

Rescue Teams Face Challenging Night

Richard Warren, representing the Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team (WMRT), reported that his colleagues experienced a "pretty horrendous night" on Thursday while conducting two major rescues near Scafell Pike involving two teenagers and a couple.

Warren advised that in "such extreme situations," people should opt for "low level walks" to ensure safety.

Similarly, the Keswick Mountain Rescue Team issued a warning that conditions on the fells would be "challenging and potentially dangerous."

Details of Rescue Operations

According to Warren, two emergency calls were received around 20:00 on Thursday.

The first incident involved 24 volunteers from three different teams who were dispatched to assist two teenagers who had become lost on Scafell Pike. Warren described this operation as "demanding."

The second incident concerned a young couple who were lost and "stuck in snow" near the same summit.

A helicopter was summoned from Prestwick in Ayrshire to aid the rescue efforts but was forced to turn back due to adverse weather conditions.

Warren further explained,

"That was another mammoth rescue, with 27 team members out early in the morning."

He added,

"The pair got lucky... it could have been a tragic outcome."

Warren concluded by reiterating that it was a "pretty horrendous night."
