UK Approves US Use of Bases for Defensive Strikes

The United Kingdom has consented to a United States request to utilize British military bases for "defensive" strikes targeting Iranian missile sites, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer announced.

However, the prime minister emphasized that "it remains the case" that the UK is not participating in strikes on Iran and will "not join offensive action now."

Sir Keir explained that the decision is grounded in the "collective self-defence" of allied nations and the protection of British lives, while accusing Iran of following a "scorched-earth strategy."

The US will employ the bases for the "specific and limited defensive purpose" of neutralizing Iran's missiles "at source," he added.

He affirmed that this action complies with international law and stated that the government will publish a summary of its legal advice.

Previously, Sir Keir had confirmed that UK aircraft were "in the sky" over the Middle East as part of a defensive operation aimed at safeguarding its allies and citizens in the region.

Statement on Defensive Measures and Legal Basis

In a statement released on social media on Sunday evening, Sir Keir reported that British aircraft had successfully intercepted Iranian strikes, but noted:

"Our partners in the Gulf have asked us to do more to defend them and it's my duty to protect British lives."

He further stated:

"The only way to stop the threat is to destroy the missiles at source, in their storage depots, or the launchers which are used to fire the missiles.
The United States has requested permission to use British bases for that specific and limited defensive purpose.
We have taken the decision to accept this request to prevent Iran firing missiles across the region, killing innocent civilians, putting British lives at risk, and hitting countries that have not been involved."
