Tributes to Sir Desmond Rea
Tributes have been paid to Sir Desmond Rea, the first chairman of the Northern Ireland Policing Board, who has died at the age of 89.
A successful businessman and academic, Sir Desmond held numerous prominent positions across the public, private, and voluntary sectors throughout a career spanning several decades.
He was knighted in 2004 in recognition of his services to policing.
Statements from Public Figures
The Taoiseach (Irish Prime Minister), Micheál Martin, acknowledged Sir Desmond's significant impact on policing in Northern Ireland following the Good Friday Agreement.
"He made an enormous contribution to the transformation of policing in Northern Ireland in the years after the Good Friday Agreement."
Martin further described him as a "man of tremendous integrity, dedicated to public service" and expressed that he was "deeply saddened" by Sir Desmond's passing.
Northern Ireland's Justice Minister, Naomi Long, reflected on Sir Desmond's enduring legacy during a pivotal period on the policing board.
"He would long be remembered for his role on the policing board during a critical and sensitive time."
She also extended her condolences, saying, "I extend my deepest sympathies to Sir Desmond's wife Maeve, his daughters and the wider family."
Dame Fionnula Jay-O'Boyle, the Lord Lieutenant of the County Borough of Belfast, expressed her sorrow upon learning of his death.

She described Sir Desmond as a "distinguished public servant" who made a "significant contribution to public life" in Northern Ireland.
Career and Contributions
Beyond his role in police oversight, Sir Desmond held several high-profile positions. He served a six-year term as chairman of the Labour Relations Agency and chaired multiple educational organizations.
He was a professor of human resources management at the University of Ulster and held various roles in banking, a dairy cooperative, and the UK Security Industry Authority.
Additionally, Sir Desmond chaired the governing body of Stranmillis University College for eight years until his retirement in 2022.
