Three Men Arrested in Mosque Arson Investigation in East Sussex

Three men have been arrested and bailed in connection with the October arson attack at Peacehaven Mosque, with counter-terrorism police leading the investigation.

Arrests Made in Mosque Arson Case

Three additional individuals have been detained by police as part of the ongoing investigation into an arson attack at a mosque in East Sussex.

Counter-terrorism officers apprehended a 36-year-old man from Eastbourne on Tuesday on suspicion of conspiracy to commit arson at the Peacehaven Mosque in October.

A 38-year-old man from Brighton and a 42-year-old man from Saltdean were also arrested on the same day on suspicion of malicious communications.

Previous Charges and Additional Suspicions

Earlier, Sussex Police charged Ricky Ryder, 38, of Richington Way in Seaford, and Jack Slowey, 34, of Mayfield Avenue in Peacehaven, with arson with intent to endanger life.

The man from Brighton arrested on Tuesday is additionally suspected of criminal damage, while the Saltdean man faces further suspicion of encouraging or assisting a crime.

All three men arrested on Tuesday have been released on bail pending further inquiries.

Investigation Led by Counter Terrorism Policing South East

Counter Terrorism Policing South East (CTPSE) assumed responsibility for the investigation into the mosque arson in November.

The arrests made on Tuesday were conducted by officers from CTPSE, with support from Sussex Police's major crime unit.

Official Statement

Supt Rachel Swinney of Sussex Police stated:

"We are continuing to work closely with our colleagues in Counter Terrorism Policing South East as they use specialist resources to investigate the arson at the mosque in Peacehaven.
"The incident caused understandable concern within the local community."

Emergency services responded to the fire at the Phyllis Avenue mosque late on 4 October.
