Stuart Hogg Stripped of MBE
Former Scotland rugby union captain Stuart Hogg has been stripped of his Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE), as confirmed by an official notice published in The Gazette.
Background of the Case
In 2024, Hogg pleaded guilty to a domestic abuse charge involving his then estranged wife. Following this, he was sentenced to a one-year community payback order.
Hogg had been awarded an MBE in the 2024 New Year honours list in recognition of his services to rugby.
Official Cancellation of Honour
The Gazette, which serves as the official public record, announced that Hogg's MBE would now be "cancelled and annulled."
Career Highlights
Hogg, a former fullback for Glasgow Warriors, earned 100 senior caps representing Scotland and participated in three British and Irish Lions tours. He currently plays for Montpellier and remains one of Scotland's all-time leading try scorers. His MBE was originally awarded for his contributions to the sport.
Public Reaction and Official Notice
After Hogg admitted to shouting, swearing, and behaving abusively towards his estranged wife, there were public calls for his honour to be revoked. His name has now been included on the official list of individuals who have had their honours rescinded.
The full notice in the Gazette reads: "The King has directed that the appointment of Stuart William Hogg to be a Member of the Civil Division of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, dated 30 December 2023 shall be cancelled and annulled and that his name shall be erased from the Register of the said Order."
