Introduction of New National Tests in Northern Ireland

Children in Northern Ireland will undertake new national assessments in reading, maths, and science during primary school and year 10 of post-primary education. This initiative follows recommendations from a comprehensive review of the current assessment methods used for children in the region.

Details of the Testing Schedule and Subjects

The new online tests are scheduled for pupils in Primary 4 (P4), Primary 7 (P7), and year 10 of post-primary school. From P4, students will be assessed in reading and maths, while science testing will be introduced starting at P7.

This approach aligns with a similar standardised testing model already implemented in primary schools in the Republic of Ireland, where reading and maths assessments have been in place for several years.

Purpose and Use of Test Results

The Department of Education (DE) has clarified that the results from these online literacy, numeracy, and science tests will not be used to compile 'league tables' ranking schools.

They said the tests would help teachers and parents understand how their children were progressing in key subjects.

Relation to Other Educational Reforms

Recent significant changes to GCSEs, AS, and A-Levels were partly driven by the goal of reducing the number of exams and tests pupils must take. According to the DE, the introduction of these new primary school assessments, expected to commence around 2030, will result in pupils sitting fewer school-set examinations overall.
