Community Takes Ownership of Local Pub
Residents of Brydekirk, a village in the south of Scotland, have successfully acquired their local pub through community ownership. The Brig Inn, situated near the River Annan, had remained vacant since 2020 until the recent purchase was finalized.

Fundraising and Support
The acquisition was made possible by a fundraising campaign that engaged local residents and supporters. The campaign included backing from various organisations alongside an online crowdfunding appeal. The purchase has been completed by The Brig Inn Pub & Hub community benefit society.

Plans for Restoration and Operation
The community group intends to restore the Brig Inn building and operate it as both a small pub and a village shop. Secretary Evie Bywaters expressed gratitude towards the financial supporters.
"The breadth of support reflects the strength of feeling for the Brig Inn and the value people place on community-owned spaces,"
"This milestone represents the culmination of several years of volunteer-led effort.
We would particularly like to acknowledge the dedication and persistence of past and present committee members, whose hard work, resilience and commitment have carried the project to this successful conclusion."
Next Steps for the Brig Inn
With ownership secured, the group will begin renovating the building to develop it as a "vibrant community pub and hub". Evie Bywaters detailed the upcoming work.
"Work will begin on detailed plans and initial improvements, ensuring the building is restored in a way that is both welcoming and financially sustainable,"
"Later this year, we also hope to launch a community share offer, giving more people the opportunity to play a direct role in shaping the Brig Inn's future and strengthening its long-term security."
Local residents are encouraged to participate in the project in any capacity.
"The Brig Inn belongs to the community, and its success will depend on continued local involvement and enthusiasm,"
"The Brig Inn has long been a central part of village life.
Bringing it into community ownership ensures it can once again serve as a place for connection, activity and opportunity - run by the community, for the community."
