SNP Pursues Compensation from Former CEO Peter Murrell

The Scottish National Party (SNP) is seeking compensation from its former chief executive, Peter Murrell, following his admission to embezzling over £400,000 from the party.

Murrell, aged 61 and the estranged husband of Nicola Sturgeon, used the misappropriated funds to unlawfully purchase various goods, including cars, a motorhome, cosmetics, and games consoles, over a period spanning 12 years.

Party's National Executive Committee Supports Legal Action

The SNP's national executive committee has endorsed court proceedings aimed at recovering the stolen funds. In a letter addressed to party members, SNP leader John Swinney announced that the party intends to apply for compensation under the Proceeds of Crime Act to reclaim the amount of £400,310.65.

Additionally, Swinney stated that the SNP will initiate civil action against Murrell, which could serve as an alternative means to recover the funds should the criminal court process not result in reimbursement.

Financial Status and Legal Proceedings

During a recent hearing, Murrell's legal representative indicated that the former chief executive possesses sufficient funds to repay the embezzled sum. However, if a confiscation order is issued, these funds would be directed to the state rather than the party.

The SNP aims to recoup its losses through a separate compensation order issued by the court.

Commitment to Financial Governance

John Swinney emphasized the party's dedication to sound financial management, stating:

"I take the good financial management of the Scottish National Party incredibly seriously and I am confident that we now have high standards of financial governance, with appropriate checks and balances in place."

In his letter, which has been reviewed by BBC Scotland, Swinney also noted a significant increase in donations from party members following Murrell's guilty plea last Monday.

"I give my personal assurance that every penny that is raised by the SNP will be spent on our efforts to secure Scottish independence."

New Police Complaint Regarding Party Finances

Meanwhile, the SNP faces a new police complaint concerning its finances. Activist Sean Clerkin informed the Scottish Sun that he is contacting the police regarding the alleged misuse of £667,000 in donations raised for an independence campaign.

Police Scotland confirmed that the issue has been brought to their attention.

This development follows Swinney's confirmation that the funds had been utilized for the SNP's "ongoing activity," affirming that the money was spent as intended on the party's independence objectives.

Upcoming Sentencing

Peter Murrell is scheduled to be sentenced on 23 June.
