Rugby Teacher Cleared of Misconduct Allegations
A former physical education teacher at a school renowned for developing rugby talent has been exonerated of any wrongdoing by the Education Workforce Council (EWC).
Lowri Mair Williams faced a fitness to practice hearing concerning alleged unacceptable conduct while overseeing girls' rugby at Llandovery College, located in Carmarthenshire.
Williams began her tenure at the private institution, which counts Wales internationals George North and Alun Wyn Jones among its alumni, in September 2023.
During the hearing held at Eastgate House in Cardiff, Williams denied nine separate allegations.
Among the accusations was that she permitted pupils to continue playing rugby after sustaining head injuries, a violation of the Welsh Rugby Union concussion protocol.
Additionally, Williams was alleged to have exhibited inappropriate behavior during a residential trip in March 2024.
The four-day hearing included testimonies from both students and teachers. Williams' legal representative submitted an application asserting there was no case to answer.
The committee concluded that
"the weight of evidence was that Williams was a diligent rugby lead who, when she was presented with an injured pupil, acted appropriately".
Regarding the claims that Williams failed to adhere to concussion and injury reporting guidelines, the committee found no case to answer.
In fact, the evidence suggested the contrary, leading the committee to determine there was
"no satisfactory evidence"supporting any of the allegations brought by the EWC.
