Polling Stations Open for Senedd Election

Polling stations across Wales will open at 07:00 BST on Thursday to begin voting in the Senedd election.

Members of the Senedd (MSs) will be elected from 16 constituencies using a new voting system, coinciding with an increase in the number of politicians in Cardiff Bay from 60 to 96.

Each constituency will elect six politicians, with seats distributed approximately in proportion to the votes each party receives within that area.

The polls will close at 22:00 BST on Thursday, with vote counting scheduled throughout Friday. BBC Wales will provide comprehensive coverage of the results online, on television, and via radio.

Unlike Westminster elections, voters are not required to bring identification or their polling card to cast their ballot.

This election marks the second time that 16 and 17-year-olds are permitted to vote in a Welsh parliamentary election.

Another significant change in this election is that voters will cast a single vote for either a political party or an independent candidate. Previously, Senedd elections involved two votes: one for an individual candidate and another for a political party.

In addition to the Senedd election, elections are also being held for the Scottish Parliament on Thursday, alongside local elections and mayoral contests in various parts of England.
