Government Intervention in World Cup Kick-Off Timing

The prime minister and foreign secretary actively engaged in efforts to prevent the rescheduling of England's World Cup match against Mexico to an earlier kick-off time, a change proposed by FIFA in the days preceding the game.

Sir Keir Starmer directed government officials to advocate, with support from the Football Association, that the match maintain its originally scheduled time slot.

Additionally, Yvette Cooper contacted the British Ambassador to Mexico, requesting that British diplomats stationed in Mexico make representations opposing any alteration to the kick-off time. This was intended to ensure that traveling England supporters would not miss the match due to any scheduling changes.

FIFA had considered advancing the match by six hours in response to a weather forecast predicting thunderstorms.

Ultimately, FIFA decided to retain the original kick-off time; however, the start of the match was delayed by one hour due to weather conditions.

The situation resulted in a delay totaling five and a half hours, causing significant disruption to England's World Cup fixture.
