Investigation into Naval Officer and MP Relationship

Last year, a senior naval officer was investigated over allegations of an inappropriate relationship with Scottish MP Joani Reid, has learned.

The MP for East Kilbride and Strathaven stepped down from the Labour Party last month following the arrest of her husband on suspicion of spying for China.

At that time, Reid issued a statement asserting she was not under police investigation and had committed no wrongdoing.

Details of the Naval Officer and Investigation Outcome

The naval officer in question commanded a nuclear-armed submarine based at Faslane. It is understood that no disciplinary action was taken against him after the allegations concerning his relationship with Reid, and he was not found to have violated any military regulations.

As initially reported by the Financial Times, security checks were conducted following the allegations, with the Ministry of Defence reportedly satisfied with the results.

The officer no longer commands a nuclear submarine; however, this change is believed to be unrelated to the investigation. He remains an active member of the Royal Navy.

Context Regarding Joani Reid and Her Husband

Reid's husband, David Taylor, was one of three political advisers released on bail last month after being accused of assisting a foreign intelligence service.

Following these events, Reid voluntarily suspended herself from the Labour Party while an internal investigation was conducted. She currently sits as an independent member in the House of Commons.
