MPs Seek Clarification from on Married At First Sight UK Allegations
A group of Members of Parliament has formally written to requesting detailed explanations concerning what they describe as "horrifying" allegations associated with the reality television series Married at First Sight UK.
A recent BBC Panorama investigation featured testimonies from two women who reported being raped by their on-screen husbands, alongside a third woman who alleged a non-consensual sexual act occurred during filming.
Parliamentary Committee Involvement
The House of Commons Culture, Media and Sport Committee has addressed letters to both and the broadcast regulator Ofcom, seeking information about their respective actions and responses to these serious claims.
"The horrifying allegations about Married at First Sight raise serious concerns over whether enough is being done to protect people taking part in reality television," said the committee's chairwoman Caroline Dinenage MP.
"Both and Ofcom, as the broadcasting regulator, have urgent questions to answer."
Questions Raised in Letters
The correspondence sent to inquires about the complaints procedure available to contestants on the programme, the measures undertaken to ensure a comprehensive investigation into the allegations, and details regarding the review the broadcaster has announced.
Additionally, the letter requests information on 's policies concerning duty of care for participants across its other reality television productions.
In parallel, the committee's letter to Ofcom questions the regulator's role within the complaints process, its authority to investigate potential breaches of the broadcasting code, and the anticipated timeline for initiating its own inquiry into the Married At First Sight allegations.
's Response and Review
has initiated an external review focused on welfare practices for the show following the emergence of serious allegations of misconduct.
Priya Dogra, the chief executive of , stated that she believes the broadcaster "acted quickly, appropriately, sensitively and with well-being front and centre" when concerns were initially raised.
Production Company's Statement
Legal representatives for CPL, the independent production company responsible for producing the UK version of Married At First Sight, have asserted that their welfare system is "gold standard" and industry-leading. They maintain that CPL responded appropriately in all cases referenced.
