Political parties have started to reveal their candidates for the upcoming by-election in the Greater Manchester constituency of Makerfield.

The by-election was prompted by the decision of Labour MP Josh Simons to resign from his position.

Although the exact date of the by-election has not yet been confirmed, three additional parties have now declared their candidates.

The list below presents all candidates announced so far, arranged alphabetically by surname. This list will be updated as further candidates are confirmed in the coming days.

Andy Burnham, The Labour Party

The Labour Party has officially selected Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham as its candidate.

Burnham, who previously served as a Labour government minister, has held the position of metropolitan mayor for the region since 2017.

Alan 'Howlin' Laud Hope, The Official Monster Raving Loony Party

The Official Monster Raving Loony Party has nominated its leader and co-founder, Alan Hope, also known as Alan "Howlin" Laud Hope.

In a statement shared on social media, the party said:

"We can confirm that our glorious leader Alan "Howlin" Laud Hope... will be standing against Andy Burnham in the forthcoming election in Makerfield."

Robert Kenyon, Reform UK

Reform UK has announced Robert Kenyon as its candidate.

Kenyon is a self-employed plumber who previously contested the constituency in the 2024 general election, finishing second to Labour's Josh Simons.

Rebecca Shepherd, Restore Britain

The Restore Britain party has named Rebecca Shepherd as its candidate.

Shepherd is a businesswoman and was the first candidate to be officially announced on Monday.
